This morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up carrying old mistakes, old hurts, or old versions of themselves that still feel close. You can pray it at the start of the day, before your phone and your to-do list take over, and read it aloud exactly as written. You are also free to use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you have found your footing.

Morning Prayers for Letting Go of the Past

Lord, I come to you before the day begins. Yesterday is behind me, but some of it still follows me into the kitchen and onto the drive to work. I think about the words I said in anger, the friendship I let slip, the choice I wish I could take back. Some mornings the old regret sits on my chest before I have even had coffee. Today I want to set it down in your hands and not pick it up again.

Father, help me to see what is actually mine to carry and what is not. Where I have done wrong, show me clearly and give me the courage to make it right if I can. Where others have hurt me, help me to stop replaying their words, even when I am tempted to rehearse them one more time. I do not have to fix every past mistake this morning. Teach me to trust that you can redeem what I cannot repair.

As I walk into the people and tasks ahead, let me meet them as I am now, not as the person I was last year. Go before me into the meeting, the hard phone call, and the ordinary moments when old thoughts try to return. Fill the space that regret leaves behind with your peace and your presence. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this morning I give you what I cannot change about yesterday. Take the weight of old regret and the sting of old hurts, and help me to walk into today lighter. Show me what needs an apology or a repair, and help me leave the rest with you. Keep me present for the people I will meet, and remind me that my past does not define my day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you pray for yourself. Ask God to show you the new thing he is already doing in the situations you face today, and let his word loosen your grip on what is over.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names the pull of the past and the pull of what lies ahead. Pray that you would keep your eyes forward, pressing toward the next step in your work, your family, and your faith.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in grief, this passage speaks of mercies that are new each morning. Pray for the grace to receive that fresh mercy today rather than rehearsing yesterday’s failures.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes sin removed as far as east is from west. Bring to God the specific thing you are still ashamed of, and ask him to help you believe it is truly gone.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that in Christ you are a new creation. Pray that your identity today would rest in who God says you are, not in the record of what you have done.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time before your day gets busy, such as while the kettle heats or during the few minutes before your alarm goes off. Sit somewhere quiet, and if you can, hold a cup or your Bible so your hands have something to do. If a particular memory keeps surfacing, name it briefly in your prayer and then return to the words on the page.

You might also pray this with a spouse, a close friend, or a small group who meets early. Ask them to pray for you by name, and offer to do the same for them. Shared prayer can make it easier to release what you have been carrying alone, especially when the past involves people you still see every week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who makes all things new go with you into this day. May he loosen the hold of old regret and fill your heart with his steady mercy. May you walk in freedom from what is behind you and in peace with what lies ahead, held by a love that does not let go.
