This morning prayer is for the moment before the day takes over, when you know decisions are coming and you want to make them with a clear head and a steady heart. Pray it early, while the house is quiet or on the drive in, before the first message, meeting or hard conversation arrives. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Morning Prayers for Making Wise Choices

Lord, I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. I know what is waiting: the emails I have not answered, the conversation I have been dreading, the small choices about money, time and my words that add up faster than I expect. Help me notice them as they come, rather than deciding on autopilot or in a rush. Quiet the noise in my head so I can hear what is true and what is simply loud.

Give me wisdom that is more than cleverness. Let me think about what is good for the people I love, not only what is easy for me in the next five minutes. When I am tempted to say the sharp thing, the careless thing or the thing that will make me look better, remind me of who I want to be. Where I am unsure, make me slow to speak and quick to ask. Keep me honest with myself about my motives, and humble enough to change course if I am wrong. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I have a day full of decisions, and I cannot carry all of them alone. Give me clear thinking at the first choice and steady wisdom at the next. Guard my tongue, sharpen my judgment and help me choose what honors you and serves the people in front of me. Let me pause before I act and listen before I answer. Thank you that you give wisdom generously to those who ask. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific decision you face today and asking God for the wisdom you lack. James promises that God gives generously and without scolding, so you can ask plainly, even about small things like how to answer a difficult email.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to surrender the parts of the day you cannot control. Pray that you would trust God more than your own first instincts, and that he would make your path clear as you move through each task and meeting.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Turn this psalm into a request for direction. Ask God to show you his ways and lead you in his truth, especially in the places where you feel uncertain about what to do next. Let the words shape your expectation that he will teach you.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that you can plan your day with care while still leaving the outcome in God’s hands. Ask him to shape your intentions, and to redirect them where they are not aligned with his will.

Colossians 3:17

Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

(WEB)

Let this verse guide your choices about words and actions. Pray that everything you say and do today would be done in a way that honors Jesus, from the way you speak to a coworker to how you spend your evening.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you check your phone or open your laptop, ideally in the first ten minutes after you wake. Sit somewhere with a cup of tea or coffee in your hands, which gives your body something to do while your mind settles. If you have a notebook nearby, jot down the one or two decisions you are most worried about, then read the prayer while looking at that list.

You might also pray this with a spouse, roommate or friend over breakfast or on a short call. Ask each other which choices feel heaviest that day, and pray for one another by name. Afterward, return to the list at lunchtime or on the way home, and thank God for the ways he gave you clarity or patience.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a clear mind and a kind heart for every choice this day brings. May he guide your steps, steady your words and remind you that you are not left to decide alone. Go into the morning knowing that the one who gives wisdom freely is walking with you.
