This morning prayer for my family is written for the first minutes of the day, before the coffee is finished and before anyone has left the house. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak your own words over the people you love. Either way, it asks God to go ahead of your household into the hours that are coming.
Morning Prayer for My Family
Lord, thank You for this new morning and for the gift of another day with the people You have placed in my home. Before the alarms go off and the rush begins, I bring them to You. Go before each of them today. Give my spouse steady hands and a clear mind for the work waiting at the office or the job site. Give my children courage for the test they are dreading, patience for the friend who hurt them, and the sense to know they are loved even when they feel invisible. Protect them on the roads, in the classroom, and wherever their feet will carry them.
Father, I also pray for the quiet worries we carry without saying out loud: the bills, the health scare that has not been resolved, the strained phone call with a parent, the tension that sits between two of us at breakfast. Settle what is anxious in us. Where we have wounded one another, soften our hearts so that we can make it right before the day is over. Fill our home with kindness that is patient and not easily provoked. Let our words build up rather than tear down, and let our table be a place of peace. Lord, be the center of this household today, and let every one of us know we belong to You. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I give You my family this morning. Walk with each of them into their day, guard their going out and their coming in, and meet the need that only You can see. Give us kind words, steady hearts, and grace for every hard moment. Keep us close to You, and bring us all home safe tonight. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer while you are still in the quiet of the kitchen, before the phones come out and the first request arrives. A cup of tea or coffee in your hands can keep you anchored, and it gives your hands something to do besides reach for the screen. If you can, stand near the window or the doorway each family member will walk through, so that your prayer follows them outward.
Invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, an older child, or a friend who lives nearby. Read the lines about each family member slowly, and pause after each name so that everyone can bring their own concern before God. Many families find it helpful to pray this together before the first person leaves the house, and then to pray the shorter version again at the door.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless your family and keep each one of you through this day. May He make His face shine upon your home and give you peace that stays with you long after the morning has ended. Go in His strength, and know that you are held.
