This morning prayer is written for the moment you think of your mother before the day gets loud. You can read it aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the places where your mother’s situation is different. Pray it while the house is still quiet, with a cup of something warm in your hands, before the first phone call or the first errand.

Morning Prayers for My Mother

Lord, thank You for this new morning and for the gift of my mother. Before I start my tasks today, I bring her to You. Be near her as she wakes, whether she is rested or aching, clear-minded or fighting confusion, and let her first thought be that she is known and loved. Give her a steady breath and a calm heart for the hours ahead, and remind her that she does not have to carry the whole day alone.

Father, I ask for wisdom and patience in how I care for her today. Where she is worried about her health, her finances, her memory, or the people she loves, meet her in those specific fears and quiet them. Help me to listen more than I speak, to be gentle when things go slowly, and to notice the small ways she needs me. Let my words to her be kind, and let my hands be useful to her without making her feel small.

I also pray over the people I will meet and the work in front of me. Go before me into every conversation, every appointment, and every decision that touches her life. Keep her safe on the road, in the kitchen, and in the bathroom, and guard her from harm I cannot see. Thank You that she is held in Your hands before I ever reach for my phone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am thinking of my mother right now. Be with her this morning and give her peace in her body and her mind. Give me patience for whatever the day brings and help me to be the kind of child she can lean on. Keep her close to You, and let her feel Your nearness before anything else happens today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

Pray this over your mother when she feels unsteady, asking God to be the refuge she runs to first. Ask that she would know He is near enough to help, even when the ground beneath her feels uncertain.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Use this passage to give thanks for the mercies that greet your mother each morning. Ask God to open her eyes to fresh grace today, and to renew it for her again tomorrow.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for your mother when her strength is low or her days feel heavy. Ask God to give her the energy she needs for what lies ahead, and to lift her up when she feels worn out.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your mother’s worries into God’s presence in prayer, naming each one out loud. Ask that His peace would guard her heart and her thoughts as the day unfolds.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Pray this when the day seems too full for one person to manage. Ask God to help your mother take each hour as it comes, trusting Him with what is still unseen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can sit still for a few minutes, such as right after you wake, while the coffee is brewing, or before you drive over to see her. Holding a cup, a photograph of her, or simply placing a hand over your heart can help your mind settle on her and not on your list. Pray slowly and pause after each paragraph to let the words sink in.

Invite others to pray this with you. A sibling, a spouse, a friend, or a faith group can speak the same words for your mother, or pray for her in their own language. Agreeing together for her morning can lighten the load you carry and remind you that she is cared for by more than one person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother and keep her this morning. May He make His face shine on her and give her a day that is gentle and full of small joys. May she rest in the knowledge that she is loved, and may you walk beside her with grace in every hour.
