This is a morning prayer for parents, whether yours are aging, struggling, far away, or simply on your heart as you begin the day. Pray it when you first wake, before the phone and the to-do list take over, or during a short quiet moment in the kitchen with your coffee. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for My Parents

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of my mother and father. Thank you for the years they have given me, the lessons they taught me, and the ways they still care for me even now. This morning I bring them to you before anything else. Be near them as they get up, as they take their first steps across the floor, and as they face whatever their health, their work, or their worries bring today. Give them steady strength in their bodies and a clear mind for the decisions they must make.

Father, I also ask for the hard things I know they carry. Comfort my dad in the pain he does not talk about. Settle my mom’s anxious heart, and let her rest in your care instead of replaying every what-if. Where they feel lonely, remind them they are not forgotten. Where they are at odds with one another or with me, soften our hearts and help us speak with patience. Guard their sleep, their finances, their friendships, and their faith, and let them sense your presence in small ordinary things today.

Help me be a good child to them today. Give me patience when I am tired, gentleness when I feel rushed, and the willingness to listen when they repeat a story or need help with something simple. Go before my parents into every appointment, phone call, and errand, and go with me too. Let this day be one where we all see a little more of your goodness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring my parents to you this morning. Hold them in your hands, protect them from harm, and give them the strength they need for today. Calm the worries I know they carry, and let them feel your nearness. Help me love them well and speak to them with kindness. Thank you that you care for them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over your parents as they go out and come in today. Ask God to keep watch over their comings and goings, whether they are leaving for work, a doctor’s visit, or an ordinary trip to the store.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse when worry is rising in your mother or father’s heart. Bring their specific anxieties to God by name, and ask for the peace that steadies a mind before the day has even begun.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

If your parents feel weary or worn down, pray this promise for them. Ask God to give them fresh strength for the tasks ahead, especially the ones that feel heavy before the day has even started.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Pray this for the wisdom to use each morning well. Ask God to help your parents, and you, number the days with gratitude, spending today’s hours on what matters most to him and to the people you love.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When your parents face a hard season, this verse reminds them that God’s mercies are new each morning. Pray that they would wake to that faithfulness and receive it as a gift for the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent moment in your morning, such as while the kettle heats, before you check messages, or during the drive to work. Keep a small note with your parents’ names on it so you remember to pray for their specific needs, including any appointments, conversations, or difficult days they face. If you can, hold a cup of tea or a worn photograph of them in your hands as you pray, letting your body remember what your heart is carrying.

Invite others to pray with you. A sibling, a spouse, or a close friend can join you by phone or text, and you can pray the same words over your parents together. If your parents are willing, consider praying with them over the phone or in person during a visit, asking God to guide their day and yours.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother and father today and keep them in his care. May he make his face shine upon them, give them peace as they move through the hours, and surround them with people who love them. May he bless you as you care for them, filling you with patience and joy for the day ahead.
