These morning prayers for police officers are written for the time before a shift starts, when the uniform is on and the day is still unknown. Pray them in the car, in the locker room, or at the kitchen table before you leave home. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words about the calls, partners and people you expect to meet.

Morning Prayers for Police Officers

Lord, I start this day knowing I cannot see what the next call will bring. Some of my shift will be routine, a traffic stop, a report, a conversation with someone who only needs to be heard. Some of it may be the hardest thing I have faced. Give me clear thinking when things move fast and steady hands when they do not. Keep my judgment sharp so that I see what is really happening, and keep my tongue gentle so that I speak with respect even when people are angry or afraid.

Be with my partner and with the officers I will work alongside today. Protect them when I cannot reach them, and let them know they are not alone when the radio goes quiet. Be with the people I will serve, the families who wait for news, the neighbors who are frightened, and the ones who have made bad choices and need someone to treat them fairly. Let me be a presence that brings a little more safety and a little more dignity than was there before. Guard my family while I am gone, and bring me home at the end of the shift. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into my shift and I need You with me. Give me calm when things get loud, clear sight when the situation is unclear, and a fair heart toward everyone I meet. Watch over my partner, my family and the people I am sworn to protect. Bring me back safely to the people who are waiting for me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the day feels unsteady and you need to remember where your refuge is. Ask God to be the place you run to in your mind before you run to a scene, so that fear does not make your decisions for you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you face a decision with incomplete information, which is most of the time in this work. Ask God to guide your steps through each call, especially the ones where the right path is not obvious.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this for your going out and your coming in, every shift and every trip home. Ask the Lord to keep you from harm on the road, in the station, and in the places you do not expect.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Read this as a standard for how you treat people today, whether they are cooperative or hostile. Ask God to make justice, mercy and humility visible in your conduct at every stop and every conversation.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel the weight of responsibility settle on your shoulders before the shift begins. Ask God to remind you that He is with you in the hard moments and that His strength is available when yours runs low.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you leave home or before you clock in, while you still have a few quiet minutes. If you are sitting in your patrol car, you can pray silently with your hands resting on the wheel, which gives your body something steady to focus on while your mind moves ahead to the day. Many officers find it helpful to pray the shorter version again at a red light or before walking into a difficult situation.

You can also pray this together with a spouse, a chaplain, a prayer partner or a fellow officer who shares your faith. Ask them to pray for you by name and to pray for the families you will meet today. Keeping a short written copy in your wallet or on your phone lets you return to it when your day changes direction without warning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every call and stand beside you in every hard conversation. May He give your partner courage, your family peace while you are away, and the people you serve a reason to trust the uniform you wear. May you return home tonight to the people who love you, carrying the grace of a good day’s work.
