This morning prayer is for the friendship that has cooled, broke, or drifted apart, and for the hope that it might be restored. It is meant to be prayed early, before the messages, meetings and small encounters of the day begin, so that your first honest thoughts are given to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for Restored Friendships

Lord, I come to you before the day starts, and I bring you the friendship that is on my heart. I think of the person I have not spoken to in weeks, or the one whose name still makes my stomach tighten when I see it on my phone. Some of what happened was mine to own, and some of it I am still angry about. Show me which is which. Soften my pride where it has grown hard, and give me the courage to say what needs saying without twisting it into a weapon.

Be with that friend today, wherever they are. If they are carrying hurt, comfort them. If they are wondering whether I still care, let them feel your kindness through someone else if I cannot reach them yet. Guard my words in every conversation I have today, at work, at home, and in the car on the way there. Let me be patient with my own feelings and gentle with theirs. If this is the day a door opens, help me walk through it humbly, and if it is not, keep my heart open and trusting in you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, before I answer my messages this morning, I ask you to go ahead of me into this friendship. Heal what is broken between us, and where I have wronged this person, help me see it clearly and name it plainly. Give them a kind heart toward me and give me one toward them. Let today be a day of honest words and real listening. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul writes about living at peace with everyone as far as it depends on you. When you pray this for a strained friendship, ask God to show you the part that is yours to do today, and to leave the rest in his hands.

Matthew 5:23-24

23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

(WEB)

Jesus tells the worshiper to go and be reconciled with a brother or sister before offering a gift. Pray this passage by asking for the willingness to take the first step, even when you are not sure the other person will respond well.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

This proverb describes a friend who loves at all times and is born for adversity. Pray it as a request that God would make you that kind of friend, faithful in hard seasons, and that he would bring the same faithfulness back to this relationship.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God forgave them. Use this verse in prayer to ask for forgiveness to flow both ways, and to let God’s mercy shape how you speak to this friend today.

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

The psalmist celebrates the goodness and pleasantness of brothers living together in unity. Pray this as a longing for that unity to return, and thank God in advance for whatever harmony he is already beginning to build.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot before your phone or your to-do list takes over, such as a kitchen chair with a cup of coffee, or a few minutes in the car before you go inside. Some people find it helps to hold the phone face down or to write the friend’s name on a card and keep it near. Let your hands rest open on the table or your lap as a physical sign that you are setting the friendship down before God.

You might also ask a trusted friend, your spouse, or a small group to pray this with you or for you on the days when the hurt feels fresh. Mention the relationship briefly to them so they can carry it too. If you feel led to reach out to the friend today, pray the shorter version first, and then decide what to send or say.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who reconciles all things go before this friendship today and walk beside it. May he give patience where there has been pride, comfort where there has been pain, and honest words where there has been silence. May his peace settle on both of these hearts as the day unfolds, and may he be glorified in whatever healing he brings.
