This morning prayer is written for anyone who wakes up carrying a choice that has no easy answer, whether it concerns a job offer, a move, a relationship, a medical treatment, or a conversation that cannot be put off much longer. Pray it early, before the phone and the inbox take over, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.
Morning Prayers for Those Facing a Difficult Decision
Lord, I wake up with a decision sitting on my chest before I have even gotten out of bed. I know the options. I have turned them over at night until my thoughts run in circles, and I am tired of the noise they make. Today I ask you to quiet that noise and give me a clear head for the hours ahead, the coffee I will drink, the people I will talk to, and the messages I will need to answer.
I confess that I want certainty more than I want wisdom. I want to know the outcome before I choose, and I want to avoid being wrong. Help me to be honest about what I fear and what I hope for, and to separate the two. Show me which of my reasons come from love and responsibility and which come from pride or panic. Where I need to ask for advice, put the right people in front of me, and give me the courage to listen to them even when they say what I do not want to hear.
Whatever I decide today, let me choose it without pretending that you are absent from it. Steady my hands and my heart, and let me rest in the truth that you know the end from the beginning. If the answer is yes, give me grace to act with care. If it is no, give me patience to wait. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am facing a choice this morning and I do not see the way clearly. Give me wisdom for the next decision and peace for the rest of the day. Keep me honest about my motives, and help me take the next faithful step, even if it is small. I trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by naming the specific choice you face and asking God for the wisdom it promises. Ask him to be generous with insight, and to give it without making you feel small for needing it.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and notice the two halves: trusting, and not leaning only on your own understanding. Pray that you would bring your reasoning to God rather than treating it as the final word.
Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
(WEB)
Pray this as a request to be guided step by step. Ask God to instruct you about the next conversation or task today, not only about the whole decision at once.
Isaiah 30:21
And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask that you would hear a clear inner direction when the day gets loud. Pray that you would recognize that voice and walk toward it, even when the path looks unfamiliar.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this when worry is pressing in on the decision. Bring each anxious thought to God as a request, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind while you wait for clarity.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with a cup in your hands, before you open your phone. Keep a pen nearby and write down one or two things you sense God saying, along with the decision itself, so that you can return to them later in the day when your thoughts start to drift back into worry.
If you live with someone, or have a friend who is praying for you, share the decision with them and ask them to pray this prayer over you as well. Hearing another person speak these words can steady you when your own faith feels thin, and it reminds you that you do not have to carry this choice alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give wisdom to the one who needs it this morning, and may he make the path clear one step at a time. May his peace settle over the choice and the hours that follow, and may the person who prayed these words walk through the day with a steady heart and an open hand.
