This night prayer is written for a small group to pray together at the end of a day, whether you meet in a living room, on a video call, or around a table after dinner. It gathers the group’s worries, tiredness and thanks into one brief conversation with God before everyone goes to bed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns of the people in your group.

Night Prayer for a Small Group

Lord, the day is closing and we bring it to you. Thank you for every person who sat with us tonight, for the laughter over coffee, the honest talk about hard weeks, and the quiet moments when someone finally said what they had been carrying. Thank you that none of us had to hold our lives together alone while we were together. Be with the ones among us who are waiting on news, facing a diagnosis, grieving someone they loved, or lying awake over a decision that has no clear answer yet. Hold them in the dark hours when worry is loudest.

We release to you the things we could not finish today: the unanswered messages, the conversations that went badly, the failures we replay at night. Forgive what we did wrong, help us forgive those who hurt us, and let us rest without pretending everything is resolved. Watch over our homes, our children, our parents and our work while we sleep. Guard our sleep so that our bodies and minds can be restored. Keep us safe from harm, from fear and from the lies that tell us we are alone. Let this group remain a place where people can be honest and be loved. We trust you with tomorrow, and with everything we cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are tired, and we are grateful for this group and for each person in it. Take our worries and set them down in your hands. Calm the anxious thoughts keeping us awake, and watch over the people we love tonight. Give us rest that is real, and wake us tomorrow ready to meet the day with you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for each person in your group by name, asking God to give them the kind of sleep that comes from trusting him with what they carry. It works well as a closing line when the group is ready to go home.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this together and let it remind the group that rest is a gift, not a reward for finishing everything. Ask God to loosen the grip of anxiety that keeps people working late into the night.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for anyone in the group who feels worn out or overwhelmed. Invite each person to name the burden they are bringing to Jesus before the prayer ends.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this over the homes, families and travel of the group members, asking for protection through the night. It is a good verse to end on when someone in the room is facing a long drive or a hard shift.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Let the group take turns naming one worry aloud, then pray this verse as a response to each one. It gives a simple, honest pattern for handing over the anxieties that keep people awake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time near the end of your gathering, after the main conversation has settled and before people start to leave. Sit in a circle or stay where you are if you are on a video call, and turn off the lights or lower them so the room feels like the end of the day. Ask one person to read the main prayer slowly while the others listen with their eyes closed or their hands open on their laps. Pause for a few seconds after each paragraph so people can add their own names and worries silently.

If your group is large or the time is short, you can pray the shorter version instead. Anyone who is comfortable can read one of the scriptures aloud, and others can take turns praying a sentence each. Some groups like to light a single candle or hold a small object that reminds them of the people they are praying for. Anyone can lead this prayer, including a host, a newer member or someone who usually stays quiet, and it is fine if the words come out imperfectly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep each person in this group as they go to sleep tonight. May he give rest to tired bodies and peace to restless minds, and may his presence be near in every quiet hour. Go in peace, and know that you are seen, known and loved.
