This night prayer is for anyone who wants to pray more consistently and with greater honesty, but who finds the day has slipped by without a single real conversation with God. Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and before you sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where the phrasing does not fit.
Night Prayer for a Stronger Prayer Life
Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired and a little ashamed. I meant to pray this morning, and again at lunch, and again on the drive home, but the hours ran together and I let them. Forgive me for treating you as an afterthought. Thank you that you have never been too busy to hear me, and that my failures do not make you less willing to listen.
Teach me to want you more than I want the comfort of distraction. When my phone pulls at me, when my thoughts drift to tomorrow’s list, when I feel too dry to speak, remind me that you are near and that you already know what is on my heart. Give me a simple rhythm I can keep, short prayers when I am rushed and longer quiet when I have room. Let prayer become something I return to, not something I have to work up the nerve to begin.
Now I give you this day and everything I did not manage well in it. Rest my body and quiet my mind. Guard my sleep, and keep watch over the people I love while I am unaware. Tomorrow I will try again, and I trust you to meet me there. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and I have hardly spoken to you today. Hear me now anyway. Help me pray more often and more honestly, one small turning toward you at a time. Keep me safe tonight, and let my first thought tomorrow be of you. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 5:3
The LORD, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.
(WEB)
Read this as a promise you can pray back to God. David names the morning as the time he lays his requests before the Lord and waits. At night, you can ask God to help you return to that habit tomorrow.
Luke 18:1
He also spoke a parable to them that they must always pray, and not give up…
(WEB)
Jesus tells this parable to show that people ought always to pray and not lose heart. Pray this verse to ask for perseverance when your prayer life feels thin or inconsistent.
Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.
(WEB)
Paul says the Spirit helps us in our weakness, especially when we do not know what to say. If you feel too tired or unsure to pray well tonight, pray this verse and trust the Spirit to fill the gap.
Psalm 63:1
God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.
(WEB)
David’s thirst for God comes from a dry and weary land. Use this verse to confess your own spiritual dryness and to ask God to create in you a deeper longing for him.
Philippians 4:6
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
(WEB)
Paul invites us to bring everything to God in prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. Pray this at night by naming the day’s concerns one by one and handing each to the Lord.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after brushing your teeth or after you turn off the television, and pray this prayer then each night. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and keep a small notebook nearby so you can jot down anything you want to bring back to God tomorrow. Attaching prayer to something you already do makes it far easier to remember.
If you share a home with a spouse, child, or friend who also wants a stronger prayer life, invite them to pray the shorter version with you. Hearing someone else speak to God can help you stay awake to what you are saying, and you can hold each other accountable in gentle, encouraging ways.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you through the night be near to you as you rest. May he draw you into a steady, honest conversation with himself, and may you wake to find that the habit of prayer has grown a little stronger in your heart.
