This night prayer is written for a veteran who carries memories, responsibilities or quiet burdens from military service into the evening. Pray it at bedtime, in the hour after the house goes still, or whenever the day has ended and rest feels far away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for a Veteran

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to You as it is. Some of it was ordinary: the errands, the phone calls, the meals and the traffic. Some of it stirred up things I have carried for years, the sounds, the faces, the decisions I still replay. Take those memories from my hands tonight. I do not have to sort them out before I sleep. Help me set down what I cannot fix and trust You with what I cannot understand.

Be near me in the dark. When my thoughts race or my body stays on alert, quiet my heart the way a steady voice calms a frightened child. Guard my family while we sleep, and guard those who serve in uniform tonight, both those who are far away and those who are still close to home. Give me rest that is real, not just the absence of noise. Let me wake with strength for what the morning will ask of me.

Thank You for bringing me safely through another day. Thank You for the people who have stood beside me, and for every mercy I did not earn. I rest in Your care, knowing You do not sleep and You do not forget me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my mind will not settle. Take the weight I am carrying and hold it for me. Keep watch over me tonight, quiet the memories that rise up unbidden, and let me sleep in the safety of Your presence. Thank You for this day, even its hard parts. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase settle before the next. It reminds a veteran that peace at night is a gift from God, not something they must manufacture by force of will.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage when watchfulness feels like a duty you cannot put down. Ask the Lord to be the one who keeps watch, so you can rest while He stays awake for you.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God honestly, naming the specific wounds you carry. Pray that He would draw near to the broken places tonight and not turn away from them.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this as an invitation rather than a command. Tell Jesus which burdens feel heaviest right now, and ask Him to give you the rest He offers.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when worry keeps circling after the lights are off. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with a peace that is larger than what you can reason your way into.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot where you usually sleep, perhaps the edge of the bed or a chair beside it. Sit or kneel with your hands open in your lap, or hold something familiar such as a dog tag, a watch or a rosary that carries meaning for you. Let the prayer be spoken slowly, pausing after each paragraph to notice what rises up without judging it.

A spouse, chaplain, battle buddy or friend who knows your story can pray this with you on the phone or in person. If sleep is hard after a night of disturbing memories, pray the shorter version as often as you need, whenever you wake. Keep a copy of the prayer on your nightstand so you can return to it without searching.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who kept you through every watch keep you through this night. May He settle your heart, steady your breathing and let you rest without fear. And may His peace meet you when you wake, ready for the day He has already prepared.
