This simple prayer for restful sleep is for the end of the day, when the house is quiet but your mind is not. You can pray it at bedtime, lying in bed, or in the minutes before you turn off the lamp. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add your own names and worries.

Simple Prayer for Restful Sleep

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day. You saw every hour of it, the good moments and the hard ones, the things I got right and the things I got wrong. Thank you for carrying me through it. Now I set down what I have been holding. The unfinished tasks, the conversation I keep replaying, the bills, the news, the worry about tomorrow. I cannot fix all of it tonight, and I do not have to.

Quiet my thoughts when they start to race. Slow my breathing and loosen the tension in my shoulders and jaw. If I lie awake, let me remember that you do not sleep and you do not tire, and that you are watching over the people I love while I rest. Watch over my family, my friends, and anyone who is awake tonight in pain, in fear, or alone. Give them a measure of peace too.

Father, I trust you with the night. Give me sleep that refreshes my body and steadies my heart, and wake me in the morning ready to face the day with you beside me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is loud. I give you today’s worries and ask for rest. Calm my thoughts, ease my body, and keep watch over me while I sleep. Let me wake refreshed and near to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you close your eyes. Pray it as a statement of trust: you are choosing to lie down because you believe God keeps you safe. Let the words replace the list of worries you were carrying a moment ago.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks plainly about the limits of human effort. Pray it as a release, admitting that you cannot work your way into peace and asking God to give rest as a gift to someone he loves.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him. Pray this verse by naming one specific weight you are ready to hand over tonight, and then let it go in your prayer.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David writes this as someone surrounded by danger, yet he sleeps. Pray it for the nights when fear is loud, asking God to sustain you the way he sustained the psalmist.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer to peace. Pray these verses by turning each worry into a short request, then receiving the peace of God as the stillness that follows.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after you have brushed your teeth and before you turn off the light, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or lying down in the dark. Keep the room cool and the lamp dim so your body understands that the day is ending. Some people find it helps to rest a hand on their chest or stomach and breathe slowly as they pray, letting each breath carry a worry out.

If you share a home, invite someone to pray it with you or over you, or ask a spouse, parent, or friend to say the words aloud while you listen. Hearing someone else speak your needs to God can loosen a knot that silent prayer sometimes cannot reach. If you are praying for a child, a partner, or a friend who cannot sleep, read the prayer with their name in place of “I” and let it become an intercession.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you in the night and give you rest that renews body and soul. May his peace guard your heart and mind as you close your eyes. May you wake in the morning knowing you were never watched over by chance. Sleep well, and be held.
