This night prayer is for anyone who carries the day’s pressures home from the office, the shop floor, the classroom or the job site. Pray it in the evening, before you lie down, when the day’s conversations are still replaying in your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for Peace at Work

Father, the day is ending, and I bring you everything that happened in it. I think about the meeting that ran long, the message I still have not answered, the deadline that is closer than it was this morning, and the person whose tone sharpened my own. Some of it I handled well and some of it I did not. Forgive me for the words I wish I had chosen differently, and thank you for the work you gave me to do and the strength to do it.

Now I set it down. I release the worries about my performance, my position, and what my coworkers think of me. I ask you to quiet the part of my mind that keeps rehearsing tomorrow before tomorrow has come. Let the work of my hands rest, and let my heart rest with it, knowing that my worth does not depend on how well this day went. Guard my sleep tonight, and give me a clear head when I wake.

Watch over my colleagues and everyone I answer to. Give them rest as well, and soften whatever is hard between us. Where I have been tense or impatient, give me the humility to make things right tomorrow. Protect my home and my family while I sleep, and remind me in the quiet that you are still at work when I am not. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the day is over and I am tired. I give you the pressure, the unfinished tasks and the conversations I cannot undo. Take my worry about tomorrow and hold it for me. Let my mind settle and my body rest. Thank you for what got done today and for your steady care through all of it. Keep me safe through the night. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you turn off the lights, trusting that sleep itself is a gift from God. Ask him to let you lie down without replaying every task from the day.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as a reminder that the work does not depend on your staying awake. Give God the labor you could not finish and let him carry what is left.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion from the workplace to Jesus in these words of invitation. Name the particular burdens you are carrying and place them in his hands.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over each anxious thought as it comes. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with the peace that goes beyond understanding.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your thoughts keep drifting back to office politics or unfinished projects. Ask God to keep your mind fixed on him so that peace can settle in.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment in the evening, perhaps when you first sit down at home, or in bed with the light still on. Put your phone out of reach and put down anything still in your hands, such as a laptop, a list or a work bag. Some people find it helps to write one or two work worries on a piece of paper, then read the prayer over them and fold the paper away.

You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, a roommate or a close friend can read it together with you, or you can text it to a coworker who is also having a hard week. Praying it aloud with another person often makes the release feel more real, and it reminds you that you are not carrying the workplace alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May your work be laid down without guilt, and your rest be deep and unbroken. May the peace of God guard your heart and mind as you sleep, and may you wake to a new day with fresh strength and a settled spirit.
