This lesson teaches children that God gave His people a way to be made clean, and that He cares about every part of their lives. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Numbers 19 is an unusual chapter, so keep the focus on God’s kindness in giving them a clear way back to Him.

Big Idea

God gave His people a way to be clean again, and He cares about making us whole. He always gives a way back to Him, and He never wants us to stay dirty and alone.

Memory Verse

Numbers 19:19

The clean person shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day. On the seventh day, he shall purify him. He shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at evening.

(WEB)

Put your hands on your chest, then pretend to wash them under running water while you say the verse together. Rub your palms slowly, then shake them dry. Each time you say it, make the washing motion bigger and happier.

The Story: Numbers 19 for Kids

Long ago, God’s people were traveling through the desert on their way to a new home. They lived in tents, and they needed to stay clean so they could stay close to God’s holy tent in the middle of the camp. God spoke to Moses and Aaron, the leaders He had chosen, and gave them special instructions.

God told the people to bring Him a red cow, a heifer that was perfect with no spots or flaws and had never worked under a yoke. The priest Eleazar took the cow outside the camp, and it was burned completely. Then the priest used cedar wood, a plant called hyssop, and a bright red cloth, and they were thrown into the fire too. Afterward, the priest washed his clothes and bathed, and he was unclean until evening.

A clean man gathered the ashes from the fire and stored them in a clean place outside the camp. When someone was unclean, the ashes were mixed with running water. A clean person dipped a plant called hyssop into the water and sprinkled it on the unclean person on the third day and the seventh day. Then the person washed their clothes and bathed, and by evening they were clean again.

God also explained what happened when someone touched a dead body or stayed in a tent where someone had died. People had to wait seven days to be made clean again. If someone refused to be cleansed, they could not stay with God’s people. God wanted everyone to understand how serious it was to stay close to Him and His holy place.

God gave these instructions so His people would remember that He is holy and that He wants them near Him. The ways He made them clean were a picture of how He would one day make people truly clean from sin. Everything God asked of them was given with care and purpose.

Read It Together

Numbers 19:2

“This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and which was never yoked.

(WEB)

Point out that God Himself began this lesson by giving a clear instruction. Explain that God is the one who makes the way clean, and that He tells His people what to do so they can be close to Him.

Numbers 19:9

“A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside of the camp in a clean place; and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for use in water for cleansing impurity. It is a sin offering.

(WEB)

Show children that the ashes were kept in a clean place for the whole community. Explain that God provided a way for everyone, including people who were not Israelites, to be made clean and welcomed among them.

Numbers 19:18

A clean person shall take hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, on all the vessels, on the persons who were there, and on him who touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave.

(WEB)

Talk about how the hyssop was dipped and sprinkled, and how it brought cleansing to people and things. Explain that God’s cleansing reached every part of the people’s lives, not just one small corner.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think God wanted His people to stay clean when they lived near His holy tent?
  • What is one thing that made the people feel dirty or unclean, and how did God give them a way back?
  • Why do you think God gave clear instructions instead of letting people guess what to do?
  • How do you feel knowing that God cares about every detail of your life?
  • What is one way you can remember that God always gives us a way back to Him?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Clean Camp

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a camp with tents in a circle and God’s holy tent in the middle. Have them draw small water drops or a bucket near the tents to show where cleansing happened. Talk together about how God made a way for His people to stay near Him.

Hyssop Sprinkle Game

You will need a small cup of water, a bundle of leaves or a paintbrush, and a few paper cutouts of people. Let children take turns dipping the leaves or brush in the water and gently sprinkling a paper person while they say, “God makes us clean.” Keep the splashes light and gentle so nothing gets too messy.

Clean Hands Reminder Card

You will need a small index card, markers, and a piece of tape or a ribbon. Have each child write or draw one simple reminder, such as a water drop with the words “God makes me clean.” Help them punch a hole in the corner and tie on the ribbon so they can take it home. Encourage them to show it to their family at dinner.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God is holy and that He takes His presence among His people seriously. The rules about ashes, water, and death point forward to the need for real cleansing from sin, which God would provide in a way far greater than any ritual. Adults can read the chapter as a reminder that God’s holiness and His mercy belong together.

Avoid overstating the details of the ritual to children, such as the exact materials or the timing of each step. Focus instead on the simple truth that God made a way for His people to be clean and close to Him. Keep the mood calm and kind rather than focusing on fear or death.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for caring about every part of our lives. Thank You for making a way for us to be clean and close to You. Help us remember that You are holy and that You always welcome us back. Amen.
