Psalm 92 teaches children that it is good to thank God every morning and every night, because He is faithful and His works are wonderful. This lesson suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is good and faithful, so it is good to thank Him every day. He always keeps His promises, and He stays strong when things feel scary.
Memory Verse
Psalm 92:1
It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, Most High…
(WEB)
Stand up tall with your arms stretched wide, like you are opening a gift. Then bring your hands together in front of your heart as you say the words slowly. Do this motion each time you say the verse so your body remembers it too.
The Story: Psalm 92 for Kids
A singer wrote a special song long ago, and it is called Psalm 92. The song was written for a day of rest, a day when God’s people stopped their work and made time to praise Him. The singer wanted everyone to know that thanking God is a very good thing to do.
The singer sang about the morning and about the night. Every morning, God shows His love, and every night, God shows that He is faithful. The singer said, “Your works make me glad, Lord!” The singer was happy because God had made beautiful things and had done wonderful work in the world.
The singer also noticed that some bad people seemed to grow up fast and look strong, like grass in the summer. But the singer knew that those people would not last forever. God is high above them, and He will make things right in the end.
The singer then thought about good people who love God. They are like a tall palm tree or a strong cedar tree. They stay green and full of life, even when they get old. They keep growing and bearing fruit because they are planted in God’s house, close to Him.
At the end of the song, the singer said that God is upright and good, and that He is like a rock that never moves. The singer trusted God completely, and that trust made the singer’s heart full of joy.
Read It Together
Psalm 92:2
To proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night…
(WEB)
Point out the two times of day in this verse, morning and night. Ask the children what they do in the morning and at night, and then explain that God’s love is with us at both times.
Psalm 92:12-13
12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 They are planted in the LORD’s house. They will flourish in our God’s courts.

Show the children the picture of a palm tree and a cedar tree. Explain that good people who stay close to God grow strong and green, just like these trees, because they are planted near Him.
Psalm 92:15
To show that the LORD is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Point to the word “rock” and explain that a rock is solid and does not move. Tell the children that God is a rock they can stand on, so they never need to be afraid.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you saw God do this week that made you happy?
- How does it feel when you thank someone for a gift they gave you?
- What do you think it means that God is like a strong rock?
- Why do you think the singer thought the palm tree and the cedar tree were good examples?
- When is a time you could thank God, other than in church?
Activity Ideas
Paper Palm Tree Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Help each child draw a tall trunk and a big green crown of leaves at the top. As they draw, ask them to write or draw one thing they are thankful for on each leaf. Hang the trees on the wall as a reminder that God helps us grow.
Morning and Night Movement Game
Clear some space in the room and have the children stand up. Call out “morning” and have them stretch their arms up toward the sky, then call out “night” and have them curl up small like they are going to sleep. Repeat several times, and each time say a short thank you to God together. This helps children connect the psalm to their daily routine.
Take-Home Thankful Jar
You will need a clean jar, some small strips of paper, and a pen. Give each child a jar and a few strips of paper. Ask them to write one thing they thank God for each day for the next week, then place the strips in the jar. At the end of the week, open the jar together and read the notes aloud as a family or class.
Teacher Notes
Psalm 92 is a song of praise written for a day of rest. It reminds adults that God’s love and faithfulness are the same every morning and every night, and that thanking Him is a joyful response to who He is. The psalm also shows that trusting God brings a lasting kind of strength, like a healthy tree that keeps bearing fruit.
When teaching children, avoid promising that bad people will always be punished right away or that good people will never face trouble. The psalm speaks of God’s ultimate justice and steady faithfulness, and it is wise to focus on God’s character rather than on guaranteed outcomes.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, we thank You for loving us in the morning and in the night. Help us remember that You are faithful and strong like a rock. Teach us to grow close to You like a tree planted by water. Amen.
