This prayer is for anyone who wants to be humble before God and the people around them but finds pride, defensiveness or the need to be right rising up again and again. You can pray it at the start of your day, before a difficult conversation, or after you realize you have spoken too sharply. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words into the spaces.

Prayer for a Humble Heart

Lord, you see me more clearly than I see myself. You know how quickly I want to be noticed, how much I want my opinions to win, and how easily I measure my worth against other people. Some days I do not even notice the pride until it has already spoken for me. Please search my heart and show me the places where I have set myself on the throne that belongs to you alone.

Give me a teachable spirit. Let me listen fully before I respond, and let me admit a mistake without hunting for excuses. When someone else succeeds, help me rejoice instead of quietly comparing. When I am criticized, keep me from building walls and help me hear what might be true. Make my reputation matter less to me than my faithfulness to you.

Shape my heart to be gentle, patient and willing to serve in quiet places where no one applauds. Remind me that the one who was greatest chose to kneel and wash feet. Lead me in the way of humility, and let my life point others toward you rather than toward me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tempted to defend myself and to prove I am right. Quiet the pride in me and make me gentle. Help me listen before I speak, and let my first desire be to honor the person in front of me. Teach me to rest in your approval rather than the approval of others. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple summary of what you are asking God to form in you. Ask him to make justice, mercy and humble walking with him the ordinary shape of your days, not occasional goals you reach for when it is convenient.

James 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God when you feel tempted to fight for your position. Thank him that he resists the proud, and ask him to give you the grace that comes with lowering yourself before him.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to turn your attention outward. Pray for the eyes to see others’ needs and the willingness to count them as more important than your own convenience or reputation.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you sense that you are heading toward a fall. Ask the Lord to keep you from the arrogance that goes before ruin, and to give you the wisdom that comes with humility.

Matthew 11:29

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

(WEB)

Let this verse draw you toward Jesus as your teacher. Ask him to make your heart gentle and lowly like his, and to help you find rest in learning from him rather than in proving yourself.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as while you make your morning coffee or sit in your car before walking into work. Hold a cup or open your hands on your lap as you pray, as a physical reminder that you are receiving what God gives rather than grasping for control. If you are praying before a specific conversation, speak the prayer slowly and then picture the other person’s face as you ask God to guard your tongue.

You can also pray this prayer with a trusted friend, spouse or small group. Ask them to pray it over you, and invite them to tell you honestly when they see pride showing up in your words or choices. Humility grows best in community, where others can love us enough to speak the truth.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a heart that is quiet before him and generous toward others. May he lift you up in his time and keep you steady when no one is watching. May you walk in the gentleness of Jesus today, and may you find your rest in the One who loves you more than any praise. Amen.
