This prayer is for anyone who wants to lift up their church family, its pastors, leaders, and members, before God. It is well suited to pray during the week, before a Sunday service, or when you hear of a need within your congregation. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for My Church

Lord, I come before you on behalf of the church you have placed me in. You know every name in this congregation, every face I see on Sunday and every person I may never have met. Thank you for gathering us together, for the people who open the doors early and the ones who stay late to clean up. Thank you that you call us a family, even when we are imperfect and slow to forgive.

I ask that you would be near to our pastors and elders. Give them wisdom when they preach and when they make hard decisions. Protect their families and their rest, and remind them that they are your servants before they are anyone’s leaders. Where they are weary, renew them. Where they feel unseen, let them know you see every hour they have given. I ask the same for our children’s workers, our volunteers, and those who serve quietly in the background.

Father, I pray for the people in our church who are hurting right now: those facing illness, grief, job loss, or the loneliness of a home that feels empty. Draw close to them and let our congregation be a place where they are carried and not forgotten. Make us slow to judge and quick to listen. Keep us united in love, and guard us from pride, division, and the temptation to care more about being right than about one another. Let our church be a light to our neighbors and a true witness of your grace. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless my church today. Be with our pastors, our leaders, and every family who gathers with us. Heal those who are sick, comfort those who are grieving, and strengthen those who feel tired of serving. Keep us close to one another and close to you. Let our church reflect your love to the people around us. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their church early in the morning, before the day’s demands begin, or on the drive to Sunday service. Keep a list of specific names nearby, such as a pastor’s family, a member in the hospital, or a new visitor, so your prayer stays concrete and personal. If you have a notebook, write down answers and needs as they come, and return to them in the weeks ahead.

You can also invite others to pray with you. A small group from your church, a family around the dinner table, or a friend from a different congregation can each take a section of the prayer. Holding a pen, a bulletin, or a church directory while you pray can also help keep your focus on the people you are lifting up.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this church and keep it in his care. May he make its people strong in faith, gentle in speech, and generous in love. May the peace of Christ settle over every home that belongs to this family of believers, and may their witness shine brightly in the places where they live and work.
