This prayer is for the moment when a friendship has gone quiet, cold, or broken, and you long to see it mended. You can pray it in the morning before you reach out, in the evening when the hurt feels fresh, or whenever you find yourself replaying a conversation that went wrong. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Restored Friendships

Lord, you know the friend I miss and the distance that has grown between us. I think about the times we laughed together, the late conversations, and the way we used to carry each other’s burdens. Now there is silence, and I do not always know whose fault it is or whether I should be the one to speak first. Some days I feel too proud to apologize, and other days I feel too wounded to forgive. Search my heart and show me honestly where I have been wrong.

Father, I bring you the hurt, the misunderstanding, and the words that cannot be taken back. Soften what has hardened in me and in my friend. Give us both a willingness to listen before we defend ourselves. If it is your will to restore this friendship, open a door that only you can open, and give me the courage to walk through it with humility and patience. If it is not yours to restore in the same way, heal the ache that remains and teach me to love well wherever I stand.

Thank you for being a faithful friend when I have not been one to others. Let your peace settle over this relationship and over my thoughts when I am tempted to rehearse old grievances. Help me to speak gently, to forgive freely, and to trust that you are at work even in the places I cannot see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see the friendship that has been broken between my friend and me. Give me a humble heart and a gentle tongue. Soften what is hard in both of us, and open the way for honest words and real forgiveness. Heal what has been wounded, and help me trust that you are still at work in this relationship. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God for the friends who have stayed close through hard seasons. Ask him to remind you of the loyalty he values, and to help you show that same steady love to the friend you are hoping to reconcile with.

Matthew 5:23-24

23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly and ask the Lord whether there is an offense you need to address. Pray for the courage to go to your friend first, trusting that reconciliation matters to God even before worship.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your resentment to God. Ask him to make you kind and tenderhearted, and to shape your forgiveness after the pattern of the forgiveness you have received from him.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with the honest word “if.” Ask God to help you do your part in peace, and to release the outcome of the friendship into his hands, since not every result depends on you.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Let this passage become a mirror. Read it slowly and pray through each quality of love, asking the Spirit to help you be patient, kind, and ready to believe the best about your friend.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time of day, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or the few minutes before you fall asleep. A place where you can sit undisturbed helps, and holding something in your hands, like a pen to write down what comes to mind or a smooth stone you keep on your desk, can steady your attention. You might write the friend’s name at the top of a page and pray through the prayer line by line.

Consider inviting someone you trust to pray this with you, whether a spouse, a pastor, or a close friend who knows the situation. Their voice can carry the prayer when your own feels tired or tangled. Return to it often, because restoration is rarely a single moment and God is patient with the slow work of healing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who reconciles all things be near to this friendship and to the hearts that carry it. May he give patience where there has been pain, honesty where there has been silence, and grace where there has been hurt. May his peace guard both of you as he draws you toward one another in his good time.
