This daily prayer for grace and mercy is for the start of a day, or any moment when you need God’s undeserved kindness and his steady forgiveness more than you need anything else. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or read it once and then speak your own version in your own words. Either way, it gives you a place to begin.

Daily Prayer for Grace and Mercy

Lord, I come to you this morning knowing that I cannot get through this day on my own strength. I have already made plans, and already I can feel how quickly they could fall apart. Some of the people I love are carrying hard things, and I do not always know how to help. Some of my own failures from yesterday still sit heavy on me, and I would rather not look at them. Meet me here, in the ordinary mess of my life, and show me that you are not waiting for me to be better before you come close.

Give me grace for the moments I will not expect. When someone speaks sharply to me, let me answer with patience instead of pride. When I feel tired and small, let me remember that your kindness does not run out. And where I have failed, whether in a word I wish I could take back or a duty I forgot, pour out your mercy on me and help me receive it without shame. Teach me to extend that same mercy to the people I meet today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need your grace right now, in this moment and in whatever comes next. Forgive me for what I have done wrong, and help me accept that forgiveness fully. Show me your kindness where I cannot see it, and give me the patience to treat others the way you have treated me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words when yesterday’s failures feel like they will follow you into today. Thank God that his compassions are new each morning, and ask him to let that newness shape the way you begin this day.

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

(WEB)

Use this passage when you feel unworthy of God’s attention. Name the reason mercy and love come from God himself, not from anything you have earned, and rest in that truth for a few quiet breaths.

Psalm 103:8-10

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. 9 He will not always accuse; neither will he stay angry forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when anger or resentment is pulling at you. Ask God to make you slow to anger and quick to mercy, the way he has been toward you.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

Read this before you pray the longer prayer, because it invites you to come near. Picture yourself walking up to a throne of grace with confidence, and tell God exactly what you need that day.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are unsure how to act toward others. Ask God to help you love mercy and walk humbly with him in each conversation, decision and small kindness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before checking a phone or starting the day’s tasks. Sit somewhere quiet, with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, so your body has something gentle to focus on while your mind slows down. If you have a few spare minutes at lunch or before bed, you can return to the prayer and let it shape how you see the rest of the day.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend who checks in with you. Take turns reading the lines aloud, and let each person add a request of their own at the end. Praying for grace and mercy together reminds both of you that no one carries these needs alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord’s grace meet you in every hour of this day, and may his mercy be new to you each morning. May he steady your heart when it feels worn, and may his peace guard you as you go about your work and your relationships.
