This night prayer is for your best friend, for the end of a day you spent caring about them. Pray it at bedtime, once the house is quiet and the day’s last tasks are done. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your heart leads.

Night Prayer for My Best Friend

Lord, thank you for the day that is ending. Thank you for the moments we shared, the laughter and the honest talk, and for the ways my friend made the ordinary feel lighter. I bring them to you now, tired and carrying whatever they could not put down today. Some of what they face is hidden even from me. You see all of it. Take the worry about work, money, family, and the future out of their hands tonight, and hold it for them.

Keep them safe while they sleep. Guard their rest from fear and from the restless thoughts that wake people at three in the morning. If they are grieving, sit with them in it. If they are waiting on an answer, give them peace that does not depend on knowing the outcome. Be near to their body, their mind, and their heart. Let them wake refreshed and let them know, without any doubt, that they are loved by you.

Thank you that you do not sleep and do not leave. Whatever tomorrow brings, I trust you to meet my friend there before they arrive. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is resting now, and I am asking you to watch over them. Quiet their thoughts, ease their worries, and keep them safe until morning. Let them feel your nearness in the dark. Thank you for them, and for the day we had. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your friend as a simple statement of trust. Ask God to let them lie down and rest without fear, knowing that safety for the night comes from him and not from their own vigilance.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to keep watch over your friend while they sleep. Thank him that the one who guards Israel never slumbers, and ask him to be the watchful keeper of your friend’s night.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend’s anxious thoughts. Ask that whatever they have carried today be handed to God, and that a peace which makes no sense to the mind would guard their heart and thoughts as they drift off.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray Jesus’ invitation over your friend, asking that they would accept his offer of rest. Name the particular weights they are carrying tonight and ask them to bring those to Jesus rather than hold them alone.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this as a word of hope for the morning. Ask God to renew your friend’s strength as they wake, reminding them that his mercies are new each day, including the day ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer near the end of the evening, after your friend’s day is over and before you turn out your own light. If you can, sit somewhere quiet with your phone set aside. Some people find it helps to hold something small in their hands, like a cup of tea or a pillow, to keep the focus on the person rather than the words.

If you live with someone, or have another friend who loves your best friend, ask them to pray the same prayer on the same night. It can be meaningful to say, “I am praying for you tonight,” and to mean it. Consider texting your friend a short line of blessing afterward, so they know someone was thinking of them while they slept.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your friend safe through this night and bring them to the morning rested and whole. May his peace settle over every worry they carried into bed. The Lord bless them and keep them, and make his face shine upon them.
