This prayer is for the people who live on your street, in the apartment across the hall, or over the back fence. You can pray it on a morning walk, while you are washing dishes, or in the quiet before bed, when the houses around you have gone still. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the particular neighbors God has placed near you.

Prayer for My Neighbors

Lord, you know the names of the people who live around me, even the ones I have only nodded to across a driveway. I bring them to you now. Be near the family with a child who is sick tonight, and the older man who lives alone and may not have anyone to call. Give rest to the couple who are arguing quietly behind closed doors, and steady hands to the single mother working a second shift. Watch over the teenagers who are walking home late and the new family still finding their way to the mailbox.

Father, I confess that I often pray for my neighbors only when something goes wrong. Teach me to see them the way you do, as people you made and love. Give me courage to knock on a door with a casserole or a kind word, and wisdom to know when to simply leave them alone. Where there is loneliness, bring someone close. Where there is fear, bring peace. Where there is need I cannot meet, show me who can.

Make this street a place where your love is seen. Let my neighbors know, through my words and my quiet faithfulness, that you are good and that you have not forgotten them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up the people who live near me. Bless the families inside those houses, and meet the ones who are struggling tonight. Give me a kind word and a helping hand for whoever crosses my path tomorrow, and let them sense your nearness through me. Thank you for the neighbors you have given me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Mark 12:31

The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

(WEB)

Jesus gave this command as the second great commandment, and it sets the heart of this prayer. As you pray, ask God to make you willing to love your neighbors the way you love yourself, with real attention to their well-being.

Luke 10:27

He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

(WEB)

Here the call to love God and love neighbor is spoken together. Use this verse to ask God to fill you with love for him first, so that love for the people beside you flows out of that relationship.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to share in the joys and sorrows of others. Pray this verse by asking God to help you celebrate with the neighbor who has good news and sit with the one who is grieving.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of carrying one another’s burdens. As you pray, name a specific load a neighbor may be carrying and ask God to show you how you might help lighten it.

Philippians 2:4

Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to look beyond their own interests to the interests of others. Pray this verse by asking God to loosen your grip on your own schedule so you can notice the needs of those around you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find that a short walk around the block is a good time for this prayer. As you pass each house, pause for a breath and speak a name or a need before moving on. Your feet and your eyes become part of the prayer, and you may notice a neighbor’s car, a window light, or a child’s bicycle that gives you something specific to bring to God.

You can also pray it with your hands busy, such as while folding laundry or preparing a meal you plan to share. Consider inviting a friend or family member to pray it with you, and ask them to name neighbors they know. Keep a short list on the refrigerator so the prayer continues through the week, and add to it when you learn something new about someone’s life.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows each name on your street keep watch over every home near you. May he give your neighbors peace in their evenings and hope in their mornings, and may he make you a faithful presence in their lives. The love of God go before them and surround them all.
