This prayer is for the times when you are grieving, whether the loss is a death, a marriage, a diagnosis, a home, or a future you had hoped for. Pray it when the grief feels too large for ordinary words, in the early morning, late at night, or in the quiet moments between other tasks. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own sorrow in the same spirit.
Prayer When You Are Grieving
Lord, you see what I have lost, and you know how much I miss it. Some mornings I wake up and forget for a moment, and then the ache returns all at once. I feel tired in a way sleep does not fix. I am not sure how to hold the empty chair, the phone I still want to call, or the plans that no longer make sense. Be near me in these hours. Keep me from pretending I am fine when I am not.
Father, I bring you the questions I cannot yet answer. Why this, and why now? What will my life look like without what I have lost? I do not need to have everything worked out before I come to you. Hold my anger, my confusion, and my tears without turning away. Remind me that you are not frightened by my sorrow and that you do not ask me to hurry through it. Give me enough strength for today, and when today is too much, give me enough for this hour.
Comfort me with your presence and with the people you have placed around me. Help me to accept kindness when I would rather be alone. Gently guide me toward rest, honest food, and the small acts of care that keep a person going. Let my grief be a place where your love can reach me, and let me trust that you are still good even while I am broken. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am hurting right now and I do not have words. You know what I have lost and you know how much I miss it. Stay close to me in this moment. Hold me steady until the wave passes, and help me breathe. Thank you that I am not facing this alone. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Pray this when you feel crushed and do not know where to begin. Ask the Lord to draw near to the specific wound you are carrying today, and rest in the truth that he is not distant from broken hearts.
Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let it speak to your mourning. Thank God that grief is not a sign of failure, and ask him to bring the comfort that Jesus promised to those who mourn.
Psalm 56:8
You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?
(WEB)
Use this when your tears seem unnoticed or unimportant. Tell God that you believe he sees each tear, and ask him to let that knowledge soften your sense of being forgotten.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
(WEB)
Pray this for the comfort you need and for the people who may one day need your comfort too. Ask God to receive your grief as part of a larger story of his mercy, one that he will use in ways you cannot yet see.
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”
(WEB)
When the pain feels endless, let this promise lift your eyes forward. Ask God to hold your loss in the light of his coming renewal, trusting that the sorrow you feel now will not be the final word.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when you can be still, perhaps early in the morning with a cup of tea or in the car before you walk into a building. Sit with your hands open on your lap or hold a small object that belongs to the one you lost, such as a ring, a letter, or a photograph. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the words settle. It is fine to stop, cry, or repeat a line several times.
You can also pray this prayer with someone you trust. Ask a friend, a pastor, or a family member to read it aloud while you listen, or invite them to pray the shorter version over you. Sharing grief in prayer does not make it smaller, but it reminds you that the body of Christ is meant to carry burdens together.
A Blessing to Close
May the God of all comfort wrap you in his peace when the sorrow feels heavy. May he steady your breath, keep your heart from despair, and remind you that you are deeply loved. May he bring rest to your nights and gentle hope to your days, and may you feel his nearness in every quiet moment.
