This prayer is for the time before and during a church service, when you are gathering with other believers to worship God, hear his word, and receive the sacrament or the sermon. You can pray it quietly in your seat before the first song, on the drive over, or in the hallway as you arrive. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the needs in front of you.
Prayers for a Church Service
Lord, thank you for calling us together on this day. Some of us come in with a full heart and some come in tired, distracted, or carrying something heavy from the week. Meet each person here exactly where they are. Quiet the noise in our minds, and help us set down the lists and the worries at the door so that we can turn toward you. Open our ears to hear what you want to say through the songs, the reading of your word, and the message. Keep the preacher faithful to your truth and give them the words you want spoken today.
We pray for the children in the nursery and the Sunday school rooms, for the older members who find the stairs hard, and for the visitor who walked in nervous and does not know where to sit. Watch over the families in our pews who are grieving, waiting on test results, or facing a hard decision. Give the ushers, musicians, greeters and volunteers strength for their work, and let no one serve out of obligation alone. Let this gathering be more than a routine. Draw us closer to you and to one another, so that we leave changed and ready to love the people we meet this week.
Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus, trusting that you hear us and that you are already at work in this room. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, we are gathered in your presence. Quiet our hearts, open our ears to your word, and draw us together in worship. Be with the people we love who are not here, and with those who are here carrying burdens we cannot see. Speak to us through the songs, the scripture and the sermon. Make us ready to receive what you give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
(WEB)
Use this verse to slow down before the service begins. Ask God to still the restlessness in your own heart and in the room, so that you can recognize who he is in the middle of everything else.
Psalm 122:1
I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to the LORD’s house!”
(WEB)
Pray this as you walk in the door. Thank God for the gift of being invited into a house of worship, and ask him to make your gladness in gathering real and not merely customary.
Hebrews 10:24-25
24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.
(WEB)
Pray this for the people sitting near you. Ask God to help you notice someone who is struggling, to encourage a brother or sister by name, and to resist the habit of staying apart.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to God if you are weary from the week. Ask him to renew your strength through worship, and to give you the patience to wait on him in the service rather than rushing ahead.
Romans 12:12
Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer…
(WEB)
Pray this for the whole congregation. Ask God to make the church a place where hope is kept alive, where people are faithful in prayer, and where suffering members are steadily supported.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying the longer version in the five or ten minutes before the service starts, while you are still seated and the room is settling. Keep your hands open on your lap or hold your Bible or bulletin, which gives your body something to do while your mind catches up. If you arrive late or in a rush, the shorter version works well during the first song.
You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a friend in your small group, or a child old enough to join in. Praying one line each and then saying amen together can turn a private prayer into shared worship. Consider praying it again as you leave, changing the last paragraph to ask God to carry the truths you heard into the week ahead.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and beside you as you gather with his people today. May he open your heart to his word, steady your mind in worship, and send you home knowing that you were seen, welcomed and loved by the God who meets his church.
