This prayer is for the time before and during a family gathering, whether it is a holiday meal, a reunion, a birthday, or an ordinary Sunday when everyone is finally under one roof. Pray it in the car on the way over, at the door before you go in, or quietly while the food is being passed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own family’s names and needs into it.

Prayers for a Family Gathering

Lord, thank you for the people who will be sitting around this table. Some of them I have known my whole life, and some of them I see only once a year. Some of them I am glad to see, and some of them stir up old hurts or tired patience in me. Help me come into this room carrying gratitude instead of a list of grievances. Give me warm words when I want to be sharp, and a listening ear when I would rather talk.

Be with the ones who are carrying something heavy today: the grief of an empty chair, the worry about a job or a diagnosis, the marriage that feels strained, the child who has stopped speaking to anyone. Let them feel that they belong here and that they are loved. Smooth the rough edges of conversation, quiet the arguments before they start, and let there be laughter that reaches the people who need it most. Teach us to honor one another across our differences, and to remember that we are a family because of your grace, not because we always get along. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are about to be together, and I ask you to be in the middle of it. Keep our tongues kind and our hearts open. Give extra grace to whoever is hurting, and help each of us to be glad that we are here. Let this gathering point us back to you, the one who holds every one of us together. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

This short psalm celebrates brothers and sisters living together in unity. Pray it over your family as a hope, asking God to make the time you spend together a place where harmony grows rather than strain.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul names patience and forgiveness as the way to live with people who try us. Use this verse to ask for the willingness to bear with a relative’s habits and to let small offenses go before they grow.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Here honor is described as something we give to one another, especially within the household of faith. Pray this verse for the way each person at the table speaks to and about the others.

Ephesians 4:2

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love…

(WEB)

Humility, gentleness and patience are the qualities Paul urges on the church, and they are just as needed around a dinner table. Ask God to clothe each family member in these virtues before the first conversation begins.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Paul invites us to bring every worry to God in prayer and thanksgiving. Use this verse for the nerves and anxieties you may feel about the gathering, and hand them over before you walk in the door.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment that is yours alone: in the driveway with the engine off, in the kitchen while the water comes to a boil, or in the bathroom for a minute before the doorbell rings. Keep a hand busy with something ordinary, like holding a dish, a gift, or a coffee cup, so that the prayer has a physical anchor and your mind has somewhere to rest. If you have a spouse or a close friend coming along, invite them to pray the shorter version with you.

If the gathering includes children or older relatives who might feel out of place, consider praying the names of each person one by one, silently or aloud. Asking God for each person by name often softens your heart toward someone you have been finding difficult. You might also send this prayer to a sibling or cousin who is anxious about the day, so that you are carrying the same request together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless every person who gathers in this home today and keep them in his peace. May he make them patient with one another, glad in one another’s company, and quick to forgive. May the love shown at this table reach beyond the walls and into the days ahead.
