These prayers for a strong church are written for members, leaders and anyone who loves a congregation and wants to ask God to strengthen it from the inside. Pray them on a Sunday morning before worship, during a midweek prayer meeting, or quietly at home when a particular church family is on your mind. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for a Strong Church

Lord, you are the one who builds your church, and we come to you today asking you to make it strong. Strengthen the people who sit in our pews each week, including the ones who arrive tired, the ones who are grieving, and the ones who have not yet decided whether they belong here. Give us patience with one another when we disagree, and tenderness when someone is hurting. Keep us from treating the church as a club for our preferences, and help us see it as your household, made up of people you have called together.

Raise up leaders who will teach your Word faithfully and care for the flock with humility. Protect our pastors and elders from exhaustion and from pride, and give them wisdom for the hard decisions ahead. Fill our children’s and youth ministries with people who love young lives and point them toward you. Let our small groups become places where people are known and prayed for. Make our worship honest, our generosity glad, and our service practical, so that our neighbors see something real.

Father, when our church feels weak, remind us that our strength comes from you and not from our numbers, our programs or our talent. Hold us together when we are pulled apart. Help us to forgive quickly, speak truthfully and love generously. Let your presence be felt among us, and let the community around us be drawn closer to you because of how we live. Strengthen this church for your glory and for the good of everyone who walks through its doors. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, strengthen your church today. Be with our leaders as they teach and shepherd, and help them rest in you. Hold our members together in love, especially those who are struggling. Make us faithful to your Word and generous with one another. Let our church be a light to our neighbors and a home for the weary. We ask this in your strong name. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 16:18

I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that the church belongs to Christ. Thank him that his purpose for his people cannot be defeated, and ask him to keep your congregation rooted in that promise.

Ephesians 4:15-16

15 But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ; 16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to help your church grow up together in love. Pray that each member would contribute to the body, so that the whole congregation becomes healthier over time.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

Pray that your church would be devoted to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer, as the first believers were. Ask God to renew those practices in your own community.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Let this verse humble you as you pray for your church. Admit that unless the Lord builds the congregation, all our effort will fall short, and ask him to be the builder in your midst.

1 Peter 5:2-3

2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, not for dishonest gain, but willingly; 3 neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your pastors and elders. Ask God to help them serve willingly and lead by example, and to guard them from pursuing gain or domination.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer early in the morning, before the day’s demands begin. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a kitchen table or a favorite chair, with a cup of coffee or a Bible open beside you. If you have a church directory or the weekly bulletin, keep it nearby so you can pray by name for specific members, staff and families as you go through the prayer.

Consider inviting a friend or a small group from your church to pray it together, taking turns reading the paragraphs aloud. Praying as a group can deepen unity and remind everyone that the church’s strength is shared. Afterward, you might write down one concern you heard in the prayer and reach out to that person with a call, a note or a meal, so that your prayer leads to action.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who builds his church hold your congregation steady and fill it with his peace. May he strengthen every member to love well, serve faithfully and speak the truth in grace. And may the good work he has begun among you be carried on until the day he completes it.
