These prayers for my children are written for parents, grandparents and anyone who carries a child’s future on their heart. Pray them when you feel the weight of a decision, a worry you cannot name, or simply the quiet moment before a child walks out the door. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces between.

Prayers for My Children

Father, you know each of my children by name. You know the number of hairs on their heads and the thoughts they have not yet found words for. I bring them to you today, the ones who are sleeping under my roof and the ones who are grown and far away. Guard their bodies from harm and their minds from the lies this world tells young people about who they are. Give them wisdom when friends pressure them, courage when they are tempted to hide, and honest hearts when they are tempted to pretend.

Lord, I also ask for them the things I cannot give them myself. Give them a faith that is their own, not borrowed from me. Let them see your faithfulness in ordinary days, in school struggles, in friendships that end, and in the answers that come slowly. Where they have been hurt, be near to them. Where they have made mistakes, let them know your forgiveness is real and that you are not finished with them. Make me a parent who points them to you rather than to myself. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you hear my children even when I cannot be there. Keep them safe on the road and in their hearts. Give them a clear mind for what they face today, kind words for the people they meet, and the good sense to come home to you when they fall. Hold them close in the places where I cannot follow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for patience and wisdom in teaching your children the way they should go, trusting him with the results you cannot yet see.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

Let this verse become a prayer of joy over your children’s walk with God. Ask him to deepen their faith and let you see it growing, even in small steps.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this blessing over your children as they come and go. Ask the Lord to keep them from evil and to watch over their going out and coming in, now and always.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many parents find it helpful to pray these words at the start or end of the day, perhaps beside a child’s bed after the lights go off or at the kitchen table before the school run. Keep a pen nearby and write the names of your children on the page, so the prayer becomes personal each time you return to it. Some people hold a small object in their hands while they pray, such as a stone or a key, as a reminder to release their children into God’s care.

You do not have to pray alone. Invite a spouse, a close friend or a church group to pray this prayer with you for your children, and ask them to remember your family in the coming weeks. When a child is struggling, pray the shorter version whenever a worry rises, even in the car or at work. God is listening in every one of those moments.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your children and keep them in his care. May his face shine upon them and his peace settle over every part of their lives. May they grow in grace, find their place in his love, and know they are never forgotten by the One who made them.
