This page offers prayers for your church: for its pastors and leaders, its members, its mission, and its life together. You can pray these words on a Sunday morning before worship, during a midweek meeting, or at home when the congregation weighs on your heart. Read the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for My Church

Lord, you are the head of your church, and I come to you on its behalf. I thank you for the people who gather in your name, for the ones who sing off-key and the ones who sit quietly in the back row, for the children who wiggle through the sermon and the older members who have prayed for this place for decades. Strengthen our pastors and elders. Give them wisdom in hard decisions, patience with people who disagree, and rest when they are weary. Protect them from pride and from discouragement, and remind them that they serve a faithful Shepherd.

Father, bind us together in love. Where there is tension between members, soften hearts on both sides. Where someone has been hurt by this church or by Christians, bring healing and make us trustworthy again. Bring the lonely into real friendship, the grieving into the arms of people who will sit with them, and the newcomers into a welcome that feels genuine. Help us care for the sick, the unemployed, the family in crisis, and the widow who sits alone on Sunday. Let our words and our budget and our time show that we belong to you. Give us a clear mission to our neighbors and the courage to speak your truth with grace. Make our worship honest, our teaching sound, and our fellowship warm. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up my church to you right now. Bless our pastors and leaders, and give them strength for the week ahead. Draw our members closer to you and to one another. Heal the sick among us, comfort those who grieve, and guide the decisions we face together. Let people who walk through our doors find you here. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:3

Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for unity in your congregation. Ask the Spirit to keep peace among people who have different tastes, histories and opinions, so that the bond of peace is protected rather than broken.

Psalm 122:1

I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to the LORD’s house!”

(WEB)

Use this verse to rejoice over your church and to remember why you gather. Thank God for the joy of meeting together, and ask that the people who come would be glad to be there.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

Pray this for the everyday practices of your church: teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer. Ask God to keep these rhythms alive and to make them meaningful rather than routine.

1 Corinthians 12:26

When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

(WEB)

This verse describes the body of Christ sharing both suffering and honor. Pray that your church would notice when one member hurts and rejoice genuinely when another is blessed.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for encouragement and faithfulness in gathering. Ask God to stir up love and good works among your members and to keep you from giving up on meeting together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their church early in the morning, before the day’s demands arrive. Sit at your kitchen table or in a quiet chair with a cup of coffee, and keep a list nearby of names and concerns you know about. As you pray, you might hold the church directory, the bulletin, or a photo of the sanctuary in your hands, and let each detail prompt a specific request.

You can also pray this prayer with others. Invite a small group from your church to read it together before a board meeting, a service, or a church-wide prayer night. If you are a pastor or leader, you might share it with your congregation so they can pray it at home during the week, and you will find that a shared prayer draws people into the same burden for the same family of believers.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who built his church keep your congregation in his care. May he strengthen its leaders, unite its members in love, and make its witness bright in the community around it. May the people who gather there know they are seen, known and welcome, and may they go out each week carrying his peace.
