This lesson teaches children that wisdom is a real treasure that calls out to us, and that listening to God’s wisdom is better than anything we could own. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the discussion, and a short activity.

Big Idea

God’s wisdom is calling to you every day, and it is worth more than gold or toys. When you listen to God and do what is right, you find real life.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 8:11

For wisdom is better than rubies. All the things that may be desired can’t be compared to it.

Cup both hands together like a little bowl, then lift them up high as if holding something precious. As you say the verse, lift your hands slowly and smile, showing that wisdom is worth more than anything.

The Story: Proverbs 8 for Kids

Long ago, a lady named Wisdom stood in a busy place where people walked by every day. She stood at the top of the hills, where the roads met, and beside the city gates where everyone came and went. Her voice was loud and clear, and she wanted everyone to hear her.

Wisdom called out to all the people. She said, “Come and listen to me, because I have wise and good things to tell you.” She spoke to the simple ones who did not yet understand, and she spoke to the foolish ones who needed a wiser heart. Her words were always true, and nothing in them was twisted or mean.

Wisdom told the people that she was more valuable than silver and more precious than gold. Nothing you could want can be compared to her. She said that people who love her and look for her will find her, and that she brings honor, goodness, and a full, happy life.

Then Wisdom told about how she was there when God made the world. Before the mountains, before the seas, and before the sky was spread out, she was already there with God. She was like a helper by his side, and she was happy every day as God made everything.

Wisdom ended with a loving message. She said, “Now then, my children, listen to me, because happy are the people who follow my ways.” She wanted everyone to know that listening to her leads to life, and turning away from her leads to harm.

Read It Together

Proverbs 8:4

“To you men, I call! I send my voice to the sons of mankind.

Point out that wisdom is speaking to everyone, not just to grown-ups. Ask the children to notice who she is calling, and remind them that God’s wisdom is open to them too.

Proverbs 8:17

I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.

(WEB)

Show the children that wisdom says she loves the people who love her. Explain that when we look for God and his ways, we will find them, and that is a promise we can trust.

Proverbs 8:30-31

30 Then I was the craftsman by his side. I was a delight day by day, always rejoicing before him, 31 rejoicing in his whole world. My delight was with the sons of men.

Point out the picture of wisdom standing beside God as he made the world, full of joy. Help the children see that God delights in good things and wants us to share in that happiness.

Talk About It

  • What is something you own that you really like, and why do you like it?
  • How can you tell when someone is trying to give you good advice?
  • What do you think it means to listen to wisdom instead of ignoring it?
  • Why might God’s wisdom be worth more than gold or toys?
  • What is one choice you can make this week that shows you are listening to God?

Activity Ideas

Wisdom Crown Craft

You will need paper strips, crayons or markers, tape, and glue sticks. Let each child decorate a paper crown with words or pictures of good things God gives, like kindness, honesty, and love. Tape the strip into a circle that fits their head, and encourage them to wear it while they retell the story.

Calling Out Game

You will need a open space and a few small items to hide, like a sticker or a toy. One child plays Wisdom and calls out “Come and listen!” while the others walk closer to find the hidden item. Each time the children find it, talk about how listening carefully helped them succeed.

Take-Home Treasure Box

You will need a small box or envelope and index cards. Give each child a card to write or draw one way they will listen to God this week, then place it in the box. Ask them to bring the box home and read the card each night, reminding them that wisdom is a treasure they can keep.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Proverbs 8 presents wisdom as a personal figure who calls out to humanity, stands at the crossroads, and offers life. The chapter also describes her as present with God at creation, which the church has long read as a rich picture of God’s wise order in the world. Many readers see in her a foreshadowing of the way Christ is God’s wisdom.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea of wisdom as a separate person in a way that confuses them about God’s nature. Keep the focus on the practical truth that God’s wisdom is good, available, and worth seeking.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for your wisdom that calls out to us every day. Help us to listen carefully, to love what is good, and to choose your ways over everything else. Teach us that you are more precious than anything we could own. Amen.
