This lesson teaches children that God always keeps His promises, even when things look hard. It is designed for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Children can use the story of David and the big sky to see how faithful God is.

Big Idea

God keeps every promise He makes, and His love never runs out. Even when we feel lost or scared, He is still faithful to us.

Memory Verse

Psalm 89:1

I will sing of the loving kindness of the LORD forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

(WEB)

Stand up tall and stretch your arms wide like the sky. Then put one hand on your heart as you say the verse together. Do it three times, getting a little louder each time.

The Story: Psalm 89 for Kids

A long time ago, a singer named Ethan wrote a song to God. He wanted everyone to know how kind and faithful God is. He looked up at the sky and saw the stars shining, and he thought about how God made every one of them.

Ethan remembered a special promise God had made to a young shepherd boy named David. God said He would choose David to be a king and would keep his family strong for many years. God told David, “I will never break my promise to you.” Ethan knew God always keeps His word.

But later, things did not look good. The king’s crown fell to the dust, and enemies came to attack. Ethan felt sad and confused. He cried out, “Lord, how long will this go on? Where is your love now?” He felt as if God had forgotten.

Ethan did not stop trusting God. He told God, “Please remember Your promise. Remember how I feel.” He knew that God still loved His people, even on hard days. Ethan kept singing because he trusted God’s heart.

At the end of his song, Ethan blessed the Lord forever. He trusted that God would keep every promise. And he sang out, “Amen, and Amen!” to show his full faith.

Read It Together

Psalm 89:2

I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”

(WEB)

Point out the word “forever.” Ask the children what they think love that lasts forever means. Explain that God’s love never gets tired or goes away.

Psalm 89:8

The LORD, God of Armies, who is a mighty one, like you? Yah, your faithfulness is around you.

(WEB)

Show the children how God is mighty and powerful like no one else. Ask them to name something big that God made, then remind them that He is even bigger.

Psalm 89:34

I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered.

(WEB)

Explain that God says He will not break His covenant, which means His special promise. Help the children understand that God’s word is always true.

Talk About It

  • What is a promise that someone has made to you, and how did it make you feel?
  • Why do you think God wants us to remember His promises?
  • When you feel scared or sad, what can you tell God?
  • How can you show God that you trust Him, even on hard days?
  • What is one thing you can thank God for because He always keeps His word?

Activity Ideas

Starry Sky Promise Craft

You will need dark blue paper, white crayons or chalk, and glue sticks. Have each child draw small stars across the paper, then write or draw one promise God has kept in their life on a star. Let them share one star with the class. Display the sky on the wall as a reminder that God is faithful.

Faithful Friend Freeze Game

Clear a space in the room and call out, “God is mighty!” Children should strike a strong pose, like a tall tree or a superhero. Then call out, “Storm!” and have them freeze, then “Promise!” and they hug themselves while staying still. Repeat a few times, and end by reminding them that God holds them safe.

Promise Pocket Card

You need index cards, markers, and a small envelope or zip bag for each child. Have children write or draw “God keeps His promises” on the card, then place it in the bag. Encourage them to take it home and keep it in a pocket, pencil case, or bedroom as a reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Teacher Notes

Psalm 89 is a psalm of trust that shows God’s faithfulness as the foundation of hope. The writer praises God’s promises to David, then honestly asks God why things seem to have gone wrong. For adults, the passage shows that it is healthy to bring honest questions to God while still holding on to His unchanging character.

Avoid suggesting to children that God will always make hard situations disappear right away. Instead, teach that God’s faithfulness is steady even when circumstances are painful. Be careful not to promise specific outcomes, but focus on God’s love and presence during difficult times.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You for always keeping Your promises to us. When we feel sad or scared, help us remember that You are faithful and You love us forever. Help us trust You every day, no matter what happens. Amen.
