This lesson teaches children that God’s word helps us grow strong and healthy, like a tree planted by water. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.

Big Idea

When we love God’s word and think about it often, we grow strong like a tree by the water. Choosing good friends and good choices helps us stay close to God.

Memory Verse

Psalm 1:3

He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

(WEB)

Stand tall with your arms stretched up like branches. Slowly bend them down and wiggle your fingers like leaves blowing in the breeze. Then stand tall again and say the verse out loud together.

The Story: Psalm 1 for Kids

Long ago, a man wrote a song to help people learn how to live a happy and good life. He said that some people choose to walk with others who do not love God. These people often make fun of what is right and do not care about God’s rules.

The writer said that a happy person does something different. He loves God’s law and thinks about it day and night. He does not follow the crowd when the crowd is doing wrong. He keeps his heart close to God.

To show how strong this person becomes, the writer used a picture. He said that such a person is like a tree planted right next to a river. The tree gets plenty of water, so it grows tall and green. Its leaves do not dry up, and it makes fruit at just the right time.

Then the writer talked about people who do not follow God. He said they are like chaff, the light, dry bits that blow away when the wind comes. They have no solid roots, so they are carried off. The song tells us that God knows the way of those who love Him, and He takes care of them.

Read It Together

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers…

(WEB)

Point out the three steps the verse describes: walking, standing, and sitting. Explain that each step moves a person closer to the wrong crowd. Ask children to notice how the verse gets closer and closer to trouble.

Psalm 1:2

But his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night.

(WEB)

Show children the word delight. Explain that delight means we really enjoy something and look forward to it. Point out the word meditates and explain that it means thinking about something again and again, like repeating a favorite song.

Psalm 1:6

For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

(WEB)

Remind children that God is never confused about who follows Him. Point out the word knows, and say that God pays close attention to His people. Help them see that God cares about the path each person chooses.

Talk About It

  • What are some ways you can keep God’s word close to your heart during the day?
  • How can the tree in the story help you think about the friends you choose to spend time with?
  • What do you think it means to be like chaff that the wind blows away?
  • Why do you think God wants us to enjoy learning about Him?
  • What is one good choice you can make this week to follow God more closely?

Activity Ideas

Paint a Tree by the River

You will need paper, paints or crayons, and a cup of water. Have each child draw a tree with strong roots and a blue stripe along the bottom for the river. Ask them to add green leaves and a few round fruits. As they draw, talk about how the tree stays healthy because it is planted by the water.

Tree and Wind Freeze Game

Ask children to stand tall with their arms out like branches. Call out “tree” and everyone stays strong and still. Call out “wind” and they blow around like chaff. Play a few rounds, and each time they freeze as a tree, remind them that staying close to God helps them stand firm.

Take-Home Word Tree

Give each child a sheet of paper and a pencil. Have them trace their hand to make a tree shape and write one word they want to remember from the lesson, such as “delight” or “grow.” Encourage them to tape the paper to the fridge so the family can talk about it during the week.

Teacher Notes

Psalm 1 teaches that a life centered on God’s word brings steady growth and stability, while a life that follows the crowd away from God leads to emptiness and loss. For adults, the psalm invites a daily habit of reflection on Scripture and careful attention to the company we keep. It also reminds us that God knows and cares for those who walk with Him.

Be careful not to make the lesson sound like a formula where good behavior always brings a perfect life. Children may connect the tree image with money, health, or success, so gently explain that the psalm speaks of God’s care and faithfulness, not guarantees about every outcome.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank You for giving us Your word to help us grow. Help us choose good friends and good paths each day. Keep our hearts close to You like a tree by the river. Amen.
