This lesson teaches children that God blesses people who love Him, trust Him, and share with others. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the discussion, and a short activity.
Big Idea
God takes care of people who love Him, trust Him, and are kind and generous to others. We can trust God even when we feel scared.
Memory Verse
Psalm 112:1
Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments.
(WEB)
Teach the children to cup their hands over their hearts while they say “Praise the LORD.” Then have them raise both arms up high on “blessed,” so the whole room learns the verse together by moving with it.
The Story: Psalm 112 for Kids
A long time ago, a songwriter sat down and wrote a special song about God. He wanted everyone to know what God is like and how God blesses His people. The song is called Psalm 112, and it is full of happy promises for people who love God.
The songwriter described a man who loves God’s commands. This man is not scared when bad news comes. His heart is steady because he trusts the LORD. Even in the dark, light comes for people who do what is right and good.
This good man is also kind to others. He lends to people who need help, and he shares with those who are poor. The songwriter said that his family would be strong and blessed too. God remembers people who are good and kind, and their goodness lasts a long time.
The song also tells about people who are not good. Their plans fall apart, and they feel sad when they see God’s people blessed. The songwriter said, in simple words, that they will not last. God’s people, though, will stand strong.
When a child asks what the song means, you can say, “God is good, and He takes care of the people who trust Him.” That is the message the songwriter wanted everyone to hear.
Read It Together
Psalm 112:2
His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.
(WEB)
Point out how the verse says the good family will be blessed. Ask the children what it might look like for a family to be blessed, and let them share ideas about love, help, and happy times together.
Psalm 112:4
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous.
(WEB)
Show the children the words about light in the dark. Explain that when things feel scary, God can bring light and comfort to people who trust Him. Ask them to name a time when light helped them feel safe.
Psalm 112:7
He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
(WEB)
Point out that the person in this verse is not afraid of bad news because he trusts God. Talk with the children about things that make them feel scared, and remind them that they can trust God with those feelings too.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you can do this week to show kindness to someone who needs help?
- How do you think God helps a person who feels scared?
- Why do you think God wants us to share with people who are poor?
- What is something you have learned about God that makes you feel safe?
- When you trust God, what can you do to show that to the people around you?
Activity Ideas
Light in the Dark Craft
You will need a paper plate, black paper or a dark sheet of construction paper, glue, a flashlight, and yellow crayons. Have each child glue the paper plate onto the black paper, then draw a small light in the center with the yellow crayon. Turn off the lights in the room and shine the flashlight on the craft while you read Psalm 112:4 together.
Share and Shine Game
You will need a small bag of stickers or pieces of candy and a few open hands. Have the children stand in a circle and pass a small item around while everyone sings a simple song. When the music stops, the child holding the item gives it to someone who needs it, and everyone claps. This helps children practice sharing like the good person in the psalm.
Trust Jar at Home
You will need an empty jar, paper, and a pen. Ask each child to write one thing they are worried about on a slip of paper, then fold it and put it in the jar. Explain that they can give these worries to God in prayer. Encourage the family to pray over the jar once a week and to remove the slips when God brings peace or help.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Psalm 112 describes what a life shaped by reverence for God looks like. It names steady trust, generosity, and integrity as marks of a person who belongs to God, and it promises that such a life is not ultimately undone by fear or hardship. Read the psalm as a portrait of character as well as a list of blessings.
Avoid promising children that following God will always bring wealth, ease, or freedom from sadness. The psalm speaks of blessing and lasting remembrance, and it speaks of trust in the middle of fear. Present God’s faithfulness as something to rely on, not as a guarantee that bad things will never happen.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for loving us and taking care of us. Help us trust You when we feel scared, and help us share what we have with others. Give us hearts that are steady and kind, just like the good person in the psalm. Thank You for always being with us. Amen.
