This lesson teaches children that God takes pleasure in His people and that we can sing and praise Him with joy. It is best for children ages 5 to 11, and the whole lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is happy with us, and we can show our joy by praising Him with songs, music, and dancing.

Memory Verse

Psalm 149:1

Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints.

(WEB)

Teach children to cup their hands like a little bowl and then lift them up high, as if offering a song to God. Say the verse together while lifting your hands, then do it again with a big smile.

The Story: Psalm 149 for Kids

Long ago, the people of Israel had many reasons to be thankful to God. They had a King who loved them, and they knew He had made them. So one day, the people gathered together to sing.

They did not sing an old song they had sung many times before. They sang a new song, because God had done new and good things for them. Their voices filled the place where they met, and everyone was glad to be there together.

The people did not only use their voices. They picked up their tambourines and their harps. Some of them even danced for joy, moving with the music. The psalm says that God takes pleasure in His people, which means He loves to see them happy and thankful.

The writer also said that God gives help to people who are humble. Those who are gentle and honest can trust Him to make things right. Even at bedtime, the people could sing quiet songs of joy in their hearts.

The psalm talks about God’s people being strong and brave, and about God’s justice for the world. The writer wanted everyone to know that God is in charge and that His people belong to Him. The people sang and remembered that God was their faithful King.

Read It Together

Psalm 149:3

Let them praise his name in the dance! Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp!

(WEB)

Point out the words about praising God with dancing and instruments. Ask the children to name a song or instrument they like, and invite them to share how they feel when they sing or dance.

Psalm 149:4

For the LORD takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation.

(WEB)

Show the children that God takes pleasure in His people. Explain that God is pleased with us, not because we are perfect, but because He loves us. Talk about how this makes you feel safe and happy.

Psalm 149:5

Let the saints rejoice in honor. Let them sing for joy on their beds.

(WEB)

Point out the word “rejoice” and the idea of singing for joy even when lying down or resting. Ask the children when they might sing a quiet song to God, such as at bedtime or in the car.

Talk About It

  • What is your favorite song to sing, and why does it make you happy?
  • How do you think God feels when we sing to Him?
  • What is one new thing God has done for you that you could thank Him for in a song?
  • How can you show your joy to God when you are at home, at school, or in church?
  • What did the people in the story use to praise God, and what would you use?

Activity Ideas

Make a Paper Tambourine

You will need two paper plates, dried beans or rice, stapler or tape, and crayons. Let each child decorate one plate, then place a small handful of beans inside and staple or tape the second plate on top to seal it. Shake the tambourine while singing a praise song together.

Dance Like the Psalm

Play some cheerful music and invite the children to move freely. Call out simple actions like clapping, stomping, spinning, or waving their arms high. Remind them that they can praise God with their whole body, not just their voices.

New Song Notebook

Give each child a small notebook or a sheet of paper folded in half. Ask them to draw a picture of something God has given them and write or draw a short “new song” about it. Encourage them to take it home and sing it for their family during the week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 149 shows that God’s people are called to joyful praise, both together in worship and in quiet moments. The psalm also speaks of God’s justice and His care for the humble, reminding us that God is the faithful King who keeps His promises.

With children, avoid making the psalm’s warlike images about the sword and judgment sound like something kids should copy or act out. Focus on the joy, the singing, and the dancing, and explain that God’s justice belongs to Him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for loving us and taking pleasure in us. Help us to sing new songs and praise You with joy every day. Thank You for being our faithful King. Amen.
