In this Romans 5 lesson for kids, children learn one big truth: God shows His love to us even when we have done wrong, and that love never runs out. This lesson suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, Bible reading and activity.

Big Idea

God loved us first, even while we were still doing wrong. Jesus came to make us friends with God, and God’s love stays with us forever.

Memory Verse

Romans 5:8

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Put your hand on your heart, then open both arms wide like you are giving a big hug. Say the verse together, and do the hug each time you say the word “love.”

The Story: Romans 5 for Kids

Long ago, a man named Paul wrote a letter to the friends of Jesus in a city called Rome. He wanted them to know something wonderful about God. Paul told them that people had all made mistakes, and no one could make things right on their own.

Paul explained that Jesus came to earth at just the right time. Jesus did not wait for people to become good before He loved them. While people were still far from God, Jesus gave His life to bring them back home. Paul wrote that this kind of love is rare, because someone might be willing to die for a very good person, but Jesus died for us while we were still wrong.

Paul also said that because of Jesus, we can have peace with God. We do not have to be scared of God being angry with us forever. Instead, we can know that God is our friend. Paul said we can even be happy when things are hard, because hard times can help us grow strong and trust God more.

Paul shared a special picture. He said that one man, Adam, let sin into the world, and that brought sadness and trouble. But Jesus brought a free gift that is much bigger. Paul said, in simple words, that God’s gift of love and life through Jesus is more powerful than anything bad that ever happened.

Paul ended by telling his friends that God’s grace is greater than our mistakes. Paul wanted them to remember that God’s love never gets smaller. It keeps growing, and it keeps bringing us to life with God forever.

Read It Together

Romans 5:1

Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…

(WEB)

Point out the word “peace.” Explain that peace means being friends with God, with no fighting between us and Him. Ask the children what it feels like to be friends with someone they love.

Romans 5:5

And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Show how God’s love is poured into our hearts, like water filling a cup. Explain that God gives His Spirit to help us know His love is real and that it will always be there for us.

Romans 5:20-21

20 The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly; 21 that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(WEB)

Point out that where sin grew big, God’s grace grew even bigger. Hold up two cups, one small and one big, to show that God’s grace is always more than enough to cover our mistakes.

Talk About It

  • What is one time someone showed you love even when you did something wrong?
  • Why do you think Jesus loved us before we were good?
  • How does it feel to know God is your friend?
  • What is one hard thing you could trust God with this week?
  • How can you show someone else the same kind of love that God shows us?

Activity Ideas

Heart Love Note Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child draw a large heart on the paper and cut it out. Inside the heart, they can write or draw one way God shows His love, like a sunny day or a family dinner. Hang the hearts on a string as a reminder that God’s love is always with us.

Peace Walk Game

You will need a open space and a few soft items like pillows or stuffed animals. Set the items on the floor as stepping stones. Have the children walk slowly from one end to the other, saying “God’s love is with me” at each step. Talk about how Jesus made a path of peace for us to walk on with God.

Take-Home Love Jar

You will need a clear jar, paper strips, and a pen. Give each child a set of paper strips and ask them to write one thing they are thankful for or one way they saw God’s love this week. They can place the strip in the jar at home each day. Read the notes together at dinner to remember how God keeps loving us every day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter teaches that we are made right with God through faith in Jesus, not by earning it. God’s love came first, and it brings peace, hope, and eternal life. Paul also shows that God’s grace is greater than human sin, which gives believers confidence and hope even in suffering.

With children, avoid overstating the difficult ideas about Adam and the spread of sin. Keep the focus on God’s love and Jesus’ gift, and let the deeper theology grow over time as they get older.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for loving us even when we make mistakes. Thank You for sending Jesus to bring us peace and to make us Your friends. Help us to remember Your love every day and to show that same love to others. Amen.
