This list gives you Scripture for a farewell gathering, whether you are the one leaving, the one staying behind, or the person asked to say a few words before a colleague, teacher, pastor or friend walks out the door. The verses below speak to the mixed feelings of endings: gratitude for what was shared, grief over what is changing, and trust that God goes ahead of every person into the next season. What they hold in common is that they point past the goodbye to the faithfulness of God, who does not leave.

Verses for Giving Thanks for Years Together

Before a farewell speech or card, it helps to name what you are grateful for. These passages remind you that every good shared season is a gift from God, and that remembering it is itself an act of worship.

1 Thessalonians 1:2

We always give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers…

(WEB)

Paul begins his letter by thanking God for the believers he loves, and he mentions them by name in his prayers. Before you speak at the gathering, write down two or three names of people you want to thank, and pray for each of them by name the week before.

Philippians 1:3-5

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…

(WEB)

Paul is grateful for the partnership he has had with his friends in the gospel, not for a shared building or title. Think of one way the person leaving has been a partner in your work or faith, and say that specific thing out loud at the gathering.

Romans 1:8

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, that your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.

(WEB)

Paul gives thanks for the faith of others and sees it spread far beyond the room where it began. Name one way the person’s influence will keep going after they leave, and let that be the note of hope that closes your remarks.

Verses for Grief and Missing People

A farewell often stirs real sadness, even when the change is good. Scripture does not hurry past that feeling. These verses meet grief honestly and anchor it in God’s presence.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord draws near to people whose hearts are broken, and that is true whether the break is death, distance or an ending nobody chose. If the gathering feels heavy for you, pause before you speak and quietly tell God where the sadness sits.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks of God keeping track of his tears, which is a tender picture of being known in sorrow. Keep a small note of your own tears as a way of trusting that they are seen, and bring them to God in prayer that week.

John 14:1-3

1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to disciples who are losing him and tells them not to let their hearts be troubled. Read these verses slowly and notice that the promise is about a prepared place and a return, which gives a farewell a horizon of hope.

Verses for Sending Someone Forward in Faith

When the person leaving is heading into a new job, city, calling or stage of life, these verses ask God to go with them. They are well suited to a blessing or prayer offered at the close of the gathering.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the priestly blessing given to Israel as they moved on, and it has long been spoken over people leaving a place. Ask the person to bow their head while you read it aloud, then let the room be quiet for a moment before anyone speaks again.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous because the Lord goes with him wherever he goes. Write this on a card for the person leaving, since new places often bring nerves that are easier to face with a reminder that they are not alone.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

The promise here is that God is with his people through waters and fire, which speaks to the hard parts of any new season. Say this verse as a blessing to the person leaving, and mention one challenge they are facing so the words feel specific rather than general.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses encourages the people as he hands leadership to Joshua, saying that the Lord will not leave or forsake them. Use this verse to close a farewell speech, since it turns attention from the one departing to the God who remains faithful.

Verses for Living Out the Goodbye

The gathering is one moment, but the goodbye continues into ordinary weeks. These passages help you keep love and prayer going after the cake is cut and the room is cleared.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every worry to God in prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart. When you feel anxious about being apart from someone you love, pray these words over that worry instead of letting it run on its own.

Colossians 3:14

Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Love is described as the thing that binds everything else together in unity. Let this verse shape the way you stay in touch, choosing a regular call, note or prayer that keeps the bond alive across distance.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

The writer urges believers to keep meeting together and to spur one another on in love and good works. Even when a community loses someone, these words encourage the remaining members to keep gathering and encouraging one another in the places they now share.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…

(WEB)

There is a time for every activity under heaven, and that includes a time to part. Read this when you feel the season ending too early, and let it remind you that God is present in the seasons that begin as well as those that close.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Believers are called to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. A farewell usually holds both joy and sorrow, so practice this verse by sharing in both feelings honestly with the people around you.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that fit the person and the moment rather than trying to use all fifteen at one gathering. Write them on a card for the person leaving, or read one aloud during a short time of prayer. A verse from the Thessalonians or Philippians works well for thanks, while Joshua 1:9 or Numbers 6:24-26 suits a blessing.

Plan to revisit these passages in the days after the gathering, when the goodbye feels most real. Pray through one verse each morning for the person who left, and let the words shape your own prayers for them by name. Reading Scripture slowly and asking God to show you one thing from it will do more good than rushing through a long list.

A Short Prayer for a Farewell Gathering

Lord, you have gone before every person in this room, and you are already present in the place they are going. Thank you for the years we have shared, for the ways this person has shown us your love, and for the lessons we will carry forward. Hold them steady in the changes ahead, and help those of us who stay to keep praying and encouraging one another. Be near in our sadness, and let our goodbyes be full of hope in you. Amen.
