This page gives you a set of Bible verses to read, pray and share when you are marking a birthday, whether it is your own, a child’s, a parent’s or a friend’s. The verses are grouped by mood so you can choose the ones that fit the day: gratitude for life, blessing for the year ahead, and joy in the company of people you love. What these passages share is a steady picture of God as the giver of days, the one who numbers our years and walks with us through each one.

Verses of Thanks for Another Year

Birthdays invite us to stop and notice that time itself is a gift. These passages turn that noticing into thanksgiving, reminding you that each year is held in God’s hands and that gratitude is a fitting response to the life he has given.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Moses asks God to teach us to count our days rightly. On a birthday, you might use this verse to pause and ask what you want the coming year to hold, then write down one thing you are grateful for from the year just finished.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This verse invites you to choose gladness on purpose, not only when the day feels perfect. Begin the morning by saying it out loud, then look for one small good thing in the first hour of the day and thank God for it.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul connects thankfulness with God’s will for his people, not with the circumstances of any given day. Tonight, before you sleep, list three people who made this birthday better and thank God for each of them by name.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

The psalmist affirms that each person was known and formed with care before birth. If you are celebrating someone else, share this passage with them and tell them one specific thing you see God has made good in them.

Verses of Blessing for the Year Ahead

A birthday often looks forward as well as back. These verses ask God for protection, guidance and peace as a new season begins, and they give you words to speak over yourself or a loved one.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the priestly blessing that Aaron was to speak over the people. It is a good verse to read aloud over a child or grandchild on their birthday, and you can also speak it over yourself as a way of asking God to keep and favor you in the year to come.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The Lord promises to watch over your going out and coming in. Use this verse as a prayer for safe travel, a new job, or a child heading off to school, and let it shape the way you commend the coming year to God.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks these words to exiles who could not see their future clearly. Write this verse on a card you can keep for the year, and return to it when the path ahead feels unclear.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul is confident that the God who began a good work will carry it to completion. On a birthday this reminds you that growth is ongoing, so ask God where he is still shaping you and be patient with the process.

Verses of Joy in Family and Friendship

Many birthdays are shared meals, phone calls and small gatherings. These verses speak to the goodness of community and the way God works through the people around us.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Two people working together have a better reward than one alone. When friends or family gather for your birthday, let this verse remind you to thank them for the way they help you up when you fall.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to rejoice with those who rejoice. Make a point of celebrating someone else’s good news this week, even a small milestone, and let your joy for them be sincere.

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

(WEB)

Laughter and a cheerful heart are described as a kind of medicine. Plan something simple and light for the day, like a shared meal or a funny card, and let the celebration be unhurried and warm.

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

The psalmist praises the goodness of brothers and sisters living together in unity. Gather the people who matter most to you on your birthday, and pray that the time together will be peaceful and kind.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, including joy, peace and kindness. Choose one of these qualities to ask God to grow in you during the coming year, and notice how you live it out on the day itself.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on a card, a note in your phone, or the inside cover of a journal, so they are close at hand on the birthday itself. Reading one verse slowly at breakfast, or sharing one with a friend over coffee, is often more meaningful than reading many in a rush.

You can also use them as a prayer guide. Read the verse, pause to thank God for one specific gift, and then ask him for one specific blessing for the year ahead. Keep the prayer short, and come back to the same verses on future birthdays to see how God has been faithful.

A Short Prayer for a Birthday Celebration

Lord, thank you for the gift of another year. You have numbered my days and held every one of them in your hands, and I am grateful for the people, moments and mercies that have filled the past year. Teach me to count my days wisely and to live each one with a thankful heart. Go before me into the year ahead, keep me safe, and shape me more into the person you made me to be. Let this day be full of honest joy and good company. Amen.
