This page gives you Scripture for Pentecost, the feast and the day the church remembers when the Holy Spirit came upon the first believers in Jerusalem. It is for anyone who wants to read the account in Acts, understand what the Spirit does in the life of a believer, and find verses to pray and carry on the day itself. The verses below share a common thread: the Spirit is a gift from God, he empowers ordinary people for witness, and he works in the open, among the whole community.
Verses on the Gift of the Holy Spirit
These passages describe the Spirit as God’s promised gift, the one Jesus said the Father would send after he ascended. They are good to read slowly on the morning of Pentecost, when the story is fresh.
Acts 2:1-4
1 Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

This is the account itself, the day the disciples were gathered together and the Spirit filled them. Read it before anything else on the day and let it set the tone. Then pause for a minute and ask God to fill you with the same presence you see in that room.
John 14:16-17
16 I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.

Jesus promised another Helper who would stay with his followers forever. When you feel alone in a difficult week, say the words aloud and thank God that his presence is not something you have to earn or summon.
Joel 2:28-29
28 “It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. 29 And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my Spirit.

The prophet looked ahead to a day when God would pour out his Spirit on all people, young and old, sons and daughters. Let this verse widen your view of who the Spirit is for, and pray for someone in your life who may not yet know him.
Verses on Power for Witness
Pentecost changed frightened disciples into bold speakers of the gospel. These verses explain why, and they are useful to read before a conversation about faith, a church event, or a moment when you feel unsure of your words.
Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”
(WEB)
Jesus told the disciples they would receive power when the Spirit came upon them, and that power was for witness. Before your next opportunity to speak about your faith, write this verse on a card and read it once, asking God to give you the words you need.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
(WEB)
Paul reminded young Timothy that God did not give a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control. If fear is holding you back from speaking or serving, repeat this verse slowly as you get ready to step out, and let it reset your focus.
Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. 27 He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.
(WEB)
Paul writes that the Spirit helps us in our weakness, interceding for us when we do not know how to pray. On days when your prayers feel thin, you can trust that the Spirit is still at work, so rest in that and keep speaking to God honestly.
Verses on the Fruit of the Spirit
Pentecost is not only about dramatic signs. The Spirit also forms character in believers over time. These passages show the quiet work of the Spirit in everyday conduct, and they suit a reflective Pentecost afternoon or an evening review of the day.
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
(WEB)
Paul lists the fruit that the Spirit produces in a life that belongs to God. Pick one quality from the list that you most need this week, such as patience or kindness, and ask God to grow it in you through ordinary moments with family or coworkers.
Ephesians 5:18-20
18 Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father…
(WEB)
Paul contrasts being filled with wine with being filled with the Spirit, which results in songs, thanksgiving, and mutual encouragement. Consider singing a hymn or psalm together with others on Pentecost, or simply giving thanks aloud for one specific gift God has given you.
Romans 5:5
And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
(WEB)
Paul says God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. When you struggle to feel loved, return to this verse and thank God that his love is already present in you by the Spirit, whatever your feelings say.
Verses on Unity in the Body of Christ
The Spirit gathered people from many nations at Pentecost and made them one body in Christ. These verses speak to the church’s life together, and they are fitting to read when you gather with other believers or pray for your congregation.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7
4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. 6 There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.
(WEB)
Paul explains that there are different gifts and different ministries, but the same Spirit and the same Lord. Ask yourself where you are gifted and where you can serve someone else with what God has given you, however small it seems.
Ephesians 4:3-4
3 Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling…
(WEB)
Paul urges believers to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace, since there is one body and one Spirit. When a relationship in your church or family feels strained, pray this verse for that person and look for one small way to show peace today.
Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
In Christ, Paul writes, there is no division of Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, because all are one. Use this verse to examine any barriers in your heart toward people who differ from you, and bring those barriers to God in prayer.
How to Use These Verses
Write three or four of these verses on a card or in the front of your Bible, and keep the card where you will see it on Pentecost morning, such as on the kitchen counter or by your bedside. Reading them aloud, even briefly, helps the words settle in your memory more than reading them silently while hurrying through a list.
Pray the verses as you read them rather than simply reading past them. Turn each one into a short request or thanksgiving, such as asking God to fill you as he filled the disciples, or thanking him for the Spirit who helps you pray. Many people find it helpful to return to the same few verses through the year, letting Pentecost become a regular time to renew their trust in the Spirit’s work.
A Short Prayer for Pentecost
Holy Spirit, you came upon the first believers with power and fire, and you are the same God who is with me today. I ask you to fill me with your presence, to make me bold in speaking of Jesus, and to form in me the fruit of love, joy, and peace. Remind me that I am not alone and that you help me in my weakness. Unite me with the people of your church, and make me an instrument of your kindness wherever I go. Amen.
