This short morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up carrying an old hurt, a grudge that resurfaces before the coffee is ready, or a quiet resentment toward someone who has wronged them. It is meant to be prayed early in the day, before the first conversation or the first message, so that the day begins with an open hand rather than a closed fist. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and words into it.

Short Morning Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Lord, I come to you before the day has a chance to get loud. You know the names I have been carrying, the people who hurt me and the words I have replayed in my head more times than I can count. This morning I am tired of holding them. Soften what is hard in me. Where I have been rehearsing what I will say to someone, help me instead to remember how much I have been forgiven.

Give me patience for the people I will see today: the coworker who interrupts, the family member who pushes my buttons, the friend who forgot to call back. When I feel the old anger rise, remind me that I do not have to win every argument to be at peace. Help me choose mercy in the small moments, not only the big ones. I cannot forgive on my own strength, so I ask you to supply what I lack.

Guard my heart from bitterness as the hours go by. Let me notice the moment resentment starts to speak, and let me bring it to you instead of feeding it. Go before me into this day and make my heart a little more like yours. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am holding on to something I need to let go of. Show me the person I need to forgive and give me the grace to release them to you. Soften my heart toward them, even if only a little, and help me trust that you see what they did and what I have carried. Let my first response today be mercy rather than revenge. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still in bed, or sitting with a cup of something warm before you check your phone or open your inbox. Many people find it helpful to keep a small notebook nearby and write down the name of the person they are struggling to forgive. Holding a pen while you pray gives your hands something to do and makes the request feel concrete rather than vague.

If you are praying with a spouse, a child, or a close friend, take turns reading a line each. Invite them to name someone they need to forgive too. You can also ask a trusted friend to pray this prayer for you on days when the old hurt feels too heavy to say out loud. A forgiving heart often grows faster in company than alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who forgave every debt you ever owed give you a heart that is soft, steady, and free today. May his peace guard your thoughts when old wounds stir, and may his mercy flow through you to everyone you meet. Go into this day knowing you are loved, and that love is enough to make room for forgiveness.
