This bedtime prayer is for a single parent who has carried the whole day alone, from the first alarm to the last load of laundry, and now needs to set it all down before sleep. Pray it at the end of the day, once the children are settled or while you sit on the edge of your own bed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or let it be a starting point and pray in your own words after the first few lines.

Bedtime Prayer for a Single Parent

Lord, the day is ending, and I am so tired. There were lunches to pack, bills to think about, a phone call I kept putting off, and a child who needed me to listen when I had nothing left to give. I did what I could, and some of it was not enough. Thank you for being with me in every hour, including the ones when I felt I was doing it all alone. You have never once left me to carry this by myself.

Now I give you what I could not finish. I release the money I could not stretch, the decisions I had to make without a second opinion, and the quiet worry that I am not doing enough for my children. Please take the weight of tomorrow too. Give my children rest tonight, and let them wake up feeling loved and safe. Keep the house safe while I sleep, and guard my body so I can get up and do this again in the morning.

Father, I ask you to be the steady presence in our home that I cannot always be. Be a father to my children where there is no father in the room, and be a comfort to me where no one else is awake to notice. Thank you for the small good things from today, the laugh over dinner, the finished homework, the moment of quiet on the porch. Hold us all in your care through the night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn out and I am handing you the rest of this day. Take what I could not manage, and cover my children while they sleep. Give me rest I did not earn, and give me strength for the morning. I trust you with what is left undone. Thank you for staying close. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lay down the pressure of providing and planning. Name the things you are trying to control, and ask God to give you the rest that comes from trusting him with the outcome.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the invitation sink in. Bring the exhaustion of parenting alone to Jesus by name, and wait a moment in silence to see what rest he might give you tonight.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for sleep that comes without fear. Ask God to make you lie down in peace, and to keep you safe through the hours you cannot watch over your children yourself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

This passage speaks to the watchfulness that you cannot keep up all night. Thank God that he does not sleep, and ask him to take up the watch over your home and your children while you rest.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this for the moment you feel you have run out of strength. Ask God to give power to your weariness, and receive his strength for tomorrow’s tasks as a gift rather than something you must produce yourself.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed place and time, such as your bed after the last light goes off or a chair in the kitchen once the dishes are done. Holding something in your hands can help you stay present, so consider a blanket, a cup of water, or the back of a child’s sleepy hand as you pray. If you have a trusted friend, family member or church member, ask them to pray this prayer for you on the nights you feel most alone. Their voice can carry what you are too tired to say.

On difficult nights, pray only the first line and let the rest of the words wait. God does not need a perfect prayer from you before he hears you. Some nights the honest sentence is simply, “Lord, I am tired, please help.” That is enough to begin, and he meets you there.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over every single parent keep watch over you tonight. May your children sleep in peace, and may you wake to mercies that are new. The Lord bless you and keep you, and give you rest where you need it most.
