This short morning prayer is for the start of a new year, when the calendar is blank and the days ahead feel large and uncertain. Pray it first thing, while the house is still quiet, before the phone and the to-do list take over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.
Short Morning Prayer for a New Year
Lord, I wake up to a year I have never lived before, and I am grateful to be here to see it. Thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day to know you and serve the people in my life. Before I think about the weeks ahead, I want to set my heart on you. I bring you the hopes I carry for this year, the work I hope to finish, and the relationships I want to tend with more patience.
I also bring you what worries me. I don’t know what this year will hold for my health, my family, my job, or my finances, and some of those questions keep me awake. Help me hold them loosely and hand them to you one at a time instead of carrying them all at once. Give me wisdom for the decisions I face today, and the humility to ask for help when I need it. Keep me honest with myself and kind to the people I will meet.
Be with me in the ordinary moments of this day: the conversations, the emails, the errands, the hard tasks I would rather avoid. Let my words be gentle and my work be faithful, even when no one notices. Make this new year a place where I grow closer to you, not only a number on a page. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, this is a new year and I am starting it with you. Be the first thing on my mind today and the last thing I remember tonight. Give me patience for the people I will see, courage for the work in front of me, and peace where I feel anxious about what is ahead. Help me take one faithful step at a time. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time before your day fills up, such as right after you wake, while you are still making coffee, or in the car before you go inside. Sit somewhere quiet, and if it helps, hold a cup of something warm or a small object that reminds you of your commitment to God. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle before you move on.
You might also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who is starting the year with you. Take turns reading a paragraph, and then pray for the person beside you by name. Writing the words on a card and keeping it by your bathroom mirror or your desk can help you return to it on the days when you forget.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you in every ordinary hour. May his mercy meet you each morning and his peace guard your heart when the days grow long. May he make you steady, kind, and faithful in all that you do.
