This is a short morning prayer for a nurse, written for the minutes before a shift begins: in the car park, at the kitchen table, or in the locker room while you tie your shoes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own patients, colleagues and worries into the gaps.

Short Morning Prayer for a Nurse

Lord, I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. You know the ward I will walk onto, the handover I will hear, and the names on the whiteboard that I have not yet learned. Give me a clear mind when the monitors begin to alarm and steady hands when a patient is frightened. Let me notice the small signs that matter: the change in breathing, the look in someone’s eyes, the question they are too tired to ask.

Father, go before me into every room. Where I am tired, give me strength that does not depend on how I slept. Where I feel I am not enough for the load, remind me that you have placed me here on purpose and that you see every person I will care for today. Keep my patience from wearing thin, and keep my words kind when the pace is hard. Help me to be honest with my team, to ask for help early, and to rest when I can.

Thank you for the families who trust me with the people they love, and for the colleagues who will carry part of this shift alongside me. Hold my own family while I am away, and bring me home safely at the end of the day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into a busy shift. Steady my hands, sharpen my mind, and give me compassion for every patient I meet today. Help me to notice what matters, to speak gently, and to ask for help when I need it. Carry the people I love while I am at work, and bring me home at the end. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your energy feels spent before the shift has even started. Ask God to renew your strength for the work in front of you, one task and one patient at a time.

Psalm 121:2

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Read this as you walk into the hospital or clinic. Let it remind you that your help does not come from your own reserves alone, and that the Lord who made you is watching over your day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this when the day already feels overloaded. Bring the specific worries of the shift to God in prayer, and ask him to guard your heart and mind while you work.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this for your work itself. Ask God to help you give each task your full attention, whether it is a dressing change, a medication round, or a quiet conversation at the bedside.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Pray this for the patients and families you will meet. Ask Jesus to open your eyes to the person behind every chart, and to help you see him in the people you serve.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this in the car park before you go in, or at the staff room sink while you wash your hands before the first round. Holding something in your hands, such as your badge, a pen, or a cup of tea, can help you stay present while you speak. If you share a car with a colleague or a partner at home, you could pray it together as a short check-in before you each start work.

If you are on a night shift or arriving before dawn, pray it at the moment you first sit down, before the phone and the emails begin. You might also write the key line on a sticky note inside your locker and read it again at the midpoint of your shift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before every nurse who serves today, steady their hands and open their eyes to those in need. May they find rest when the work is done, and may the peace of God keep their hearts as they care for others.
