This short morning prayer is for the hours before an exam, when nerves are high and the day feels like it belongs to the test alone. Pray it early, while you are still at home or on the way to school or work, before the first worry of the day takes hold. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for an Upcoming Exam

Lord, thank you for this new morning. I did not make this day, and I do not have to carry it alone. You know what I studied and what I did not get to, the notes I reread last night and the questions I still cannot answer. Help me remember what I have learned and let it come back to me clearly when I need it. Quiet the racing in my chest so I can think.

Give me a steady mind as I get ready and as I walk into the room. Keep me from comparing myself to the people around me, and from measuring my worth by one score. Help me read each question carefully, to stop when I am stuck and breathe, then go on. If I forget something, let me trust that you are still with me. Guard my focus and my honesty, and let me do my honest best today.

Whatever the result, let me rest in your love, which does not depend on how I perform. I give you this exam, my nerves, and my hopes for the future. Thank you for going ahead of me into this day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious about this exam. Steady my heart and clear my thinking. Help me remember what I have prepared, and help me do my best without fear. Be with me in the room and walk with me out again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Use these verses to bring your anxiety about the exam straight to God in prayer and thanksgiving. Ask for the peace that does not make sense on paper, and let it guard your thoughts before you walk into the room.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you must have every answer ready. Ask God to direct your steps through the questions you know and the ones you have to work out.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you prepare to leave the house. Thank God that he promises his presence, and ask him to strengthen you when your confidence wavers.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Ask for wisdom before the first question appears on the page. Pray that God would give you clear thinking to recall what you studied and to choose sensibly where the answer is not obvious.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Pray this when fear rises in the hallway or the waiting room. Name the fear to God, then choose to trust him again in that moment.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it in the quiet minutes after you wake, before you check your phone or your messages. Sit at the kitchen table or stand by a window with a cup of something warm in your hands, so your body has something to do while your mind settles. If you are rushing out the door, you can pray the shorter version while you put on your shoes or pack your bag.

Invite a friend, parent, or mentor to pray with you, or send them the words so they can pray for you while you are in the exam. Ask them to check on you afterward, whatever the outcome, so you do not walk home alone with the result. Their prayers and yours can carry you through the same morning together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every question and stay with you through every minute of the test. May his peace settle your mind and his strength steady your hands. Whatever happens in that room, may you walk out knowing you are deeply loved and fully held.
