This short morning prayer is for asking God to watch over your family before the day pulls everyone in different directions. Pray it as you wake, over coffee, or in the car before the first drop-off, reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point for your own words.
Short Morning Prayer for My Family
Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the people you have placed in my home. Before anyone is up, I bring them to you. Be with my spouse as they face their work and whatever stress the day holds. Be with my children as they get ready for school, for the test they are nervous about, and for the friend who has been hard to get along with lately. Give them courage where they feel small and patience where they feel tired.
Go before us into the hours ahead. Guard our words at breakfast, our tempers in traffic, and our hearts when we are tempted to rush past each other. Where there is worry, settle it. Where there is sickness or grief, comfort us and give us the strength to help one another. Let us be kind when kindness costs something. Keep us close to you today, so that wherever we go, we carry your peace home again tonight. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I give you my family this morning. Steady each of us for the work and the people in front of us. Keep our words gentle, our hands busy with good things, and our hearts near to you. Help us remember that we are not facing this day alone. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it while your hands are busy with something simple, such as making the lunches, filling the water bottles, or holding a warm mug at the kitchen table. Keep a quiet moment before anyone else wakes if you can, and let the words be a few minutes of attention rather than a rushed checklist. If someone else in the house is awake, you can ask them to add a name or a worry of their own.
If you cannot pray alone, invite your spouse or an older child to say the prayer with you, taking turns with the sentences. Some families keep a card with the prayer by the front door and read it together as they leave. Others pray it over the phone with a relative who lives far away. However you use it, pray it again tomorrow, since each morning brings its own needs.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before your family today and walk beside each of you through every hour. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and may his peace settle over your home when the day is done. Go in that peace, and know you are held.
