This short prayer during grief is for the moments when a loss feels too large to hold: the days after a funeral, the quiet hour before dawn, or the sudden wave that arrives in the middle of an ordinary errand. It gives you honest words to bring to God when you do not know how to pray. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer During Grief

Lord, I come to you with an ache I cannot name fully. Someone I loved is gone, and the house, the phone and the calendar all remind me of what is missing. Some mornings I forget for a second and then remember all over again. Some nights I cannot sleep because my mind keeps returning to the last conversation, or to the things I wish I had said. Be near me in those moments. You know what I have lost, and you know how much it cost me to love them.

I also bring you the practical weight that grief brings with it: the paperwork, the decisions, the people who need answers from me while I still feel unsteady. I ask for enough strength for the next hour, not the next year. Help me to rest when my body is tired and to eat when I have no appetite. Send me friends who will sit with me without trying to fix anything, and give me the grace to accept their help when I would rather be alone. If I am angry, let me say so to you honestly. If I am numb, meet me there too.

Father, hold the person I miss in your care, and hold me in mine. Comfort me in the places where my heart is still breaking, and remind me that my tears do not frighten you. Let me trust that you are close to the brokenhearted, even when I cannot feel you. I give you this grief today, one breath at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am missing them right now, and it hurts. Stay close to me in this moment. Steady my breathing, calm the fear that I will not survive this sadness, and remind me that I am not carrying it alone. Help me take the next small step. I trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel crushed and cannot find the words. Ask God to draw near to the exact place where your heart feels broken, and thank him that nearness is his nature, not a reward you must earn.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring your wounds to God by name, one at a time if you need to. The verse describes a God who does not simply observe pain but binds it up. Ask him to show you where healing is already beginning, even slowly.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks this blessing to people in mourning, which means your sorrow is not a sign that you have failed at faith. Pray it back to him and ask him to give you the comfort he promised to those who grieve.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

When grief feels endless, read this verse slowly and let it point you toward the day when death and sorrow will be no more. Pray for hope that reaches past this season without minimizing the pain you feel today.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul calls God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. Pray this passage asking God to comfort you so that, in time, you can offer the same comfort to someone else who is hurting.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find grief hardest in the early morning or late at night, when the house is quiet and nothing distracts from the absence. Choose one of those times to pray this prayer, sitting in a chair you can stay in for a few minutes. If you are able, hold something in your hands while you speak: a photograph, a worn piece of fabric, a cup of tea going cold. The physical object gives your attention somewhere to rest when words run out.

You do not have to pray the whole prayer at once. Read one paragraph, pause, then continue when you are ready. A close friend, a pastor or a family member can also pray it with you or over you, speaking the words aloud on your behalf. Grief is lighter when someone else holds the prayer with you, even if they cannot take the sorrow itself away.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord remain close to your broken places and steady you through each hard day. May he give you rest when sleep will not come and companions when the house feels too quiet. May his peace guard your heart as you learn to carry this loss, and may you find his faithfulness waiting for you in the morning.
