This short prayer is for a child starting school, whether that means their first day of kindergarten, a move to a new campus, or the first morning of a big transition. Pray it in the car on the way, at the kitchen table over breakfast, or quietly at the school gate as you say goodbye. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for a Child Starting School

Lord, thank you for this little one you have known since before they were born. Today they are walking into a room full of unfamiliar faces, new sounds and rules they have not learned yet. Be with them in the hallway, at the coat hooks, and in the moment when they look back for a familiar face and see only the door. Give them courage to take the first step and kindness to recognize the children who will become their friends.

Help their teacher to see them clearly and to be patient with questions, tears and tired afternoons. Let their mind be open to learning, their hands be willing to try, and their heart remember that they are loved far beyond anything a classroom can measure. When they feel small, remind them that you are close and that they belong to you. Keep them safe, and bring them home to us tonight with stories to tell. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are already at this school before my child arrives. Go ahead of them today. Give them a brave heart, a friendly face to meet, and a teacher who notices them. When they are nervous, calm them. When they are proud, let them share it. Keep them in your care until we see them again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Read this as you drive to school together. Pray that your child will hold onto the truth that they go into the day not alone, and that the Lord who goes before them will not leave them in an unfamiliar room.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Pray this for the teachers and for yourself as a parent. Ask that your child will be guided in wisdom and growth through the years ahead, one small lesson at a time.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are watching the classroom door close behind your child. Ask God to guard their coming and going, from the first bell of the morning to the moment you see them again.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this when your child seems anxious about new people or new rules. Ask that they would know God is near and strengthening them, even when the day feels big.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for the worries you carry as a parent. Ask God to quiet your heart as well as your child’s, so that peace can guard both of you through the first weeks of school.

How to Pray This Prayer

The easiest time to pray is in the car or on the walk to the bus stop, when your child is beside you and the day has not yet begun. Place a hand on their shoulder or hold their hand as you speak. Children often relax when they feel a parent’s touch while someone is talking to God about them, and it makes the prayer something they can remember.

You might also invite a grandparent, a friend, or your child’s church family to pray the same words for them. Keep a copy of the prayer on the refrigerator or in your phone, and pray it again each morning for the first few weeks. Over time, your child may begin to say it with you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this child into every new room and stay with them through the long, bright day. May they grow in joy, curiosity and kindness, and may they always know exactly where home is when the school bell rings at the end of the day.
