A short prayer for a new month gives you words to bring your plans, worries and hopes before God as the calendar turns. Pray it on the first morning of the month, or on the evening before, when the page is still blank and you are not yet sure what the weeks will hold. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs that are on your heart.

Short Prayer for a New Month

Lord, thank you for this new month and for the gift of another day to start again. I do not know everything that is ahead. Some of it I am looking forward to, and some of it makes my stomach tighten when I think about it. Help me to hold my calendar loosely and my hands open. Show me what matters most in these weeks, and help me let go of the things that only fill my time without filling my heart.

Be with the people I love this month. Give my family rest, patience and kindness toward one another. Be near the friend who is waiting on test results, the coworker who is carrying more than anyone knows, and the neighbor who is lonely. Where I have been careless with my words, forgive me, and help me make things right before the month runs out. Keep my work honest, my money wise and my thoughts pointed toward you. Teach me to ask for help when I need it, and to notice the small mercies you place along the way. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this month is new and I am not sure how it will go. Give me enough grace for today and trust for the days after it. Guard my heart from worry and my mouth from harshness. Bless the people I will see this week, and help me be a steady presence in their lives. Make me faithful in small things. I give you this month and everything in it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Ask God to teach you to use your days wisely. Let this verse shape how you look at your calendar, so that you choose what deserves your time and release what does not.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring the plans you have already made to God and ask him to direct your steps. Pray for the humility to trust him even when a month does not unfold the way you expected.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

When the list of worries for the month grows long, pray this passage slowly. Hand each concern to God by name, and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you wait.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for newness in the places that feel stuck. Ask God to make a way where you cannot see one, and to open your eyes to what he is already beginning.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full prayer on the first morning of the month, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee before the day starts pulling at you. Keep a pen nearby and jot down the names or situations that come to mind as you pray, then tuck the note into your planner. Coming back to it at the end of the month can be a quiet way to see how God has been faithful.

If you live with others, consider reading the shorter version together at breakfast or before bed. Children can say the line about being a steady presence, and older family members can add their own requests. A friend who prays with you by phone on the first day of the month can help you stay accountable to the commitments you make in prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this new month and walk beside you every step of the way. May he give you wisdom for each decision, patience for each interruption and joy in each small gift. May you know that you are seen, loved and held through all that the coming weeks bring.
