These prayers are written for anyone who wants to bring their country before God, whether in a season of division, an election, a national crisis, or simply as a regular act of love for the place you call home. Pray them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own concerns in the same spirit. Scripture encourages believers to pray for those in authority and for the wellbeing of the communities where they live.

Prayers for My Country

Lord, you are the God over every nation, and you know every street, town, and household in the land I call home. I come to you on its behalf. I ask for wisdom for those who lead it, the leaders in its capital, its courts, its schools, and its local councils. Give them honesty when it would be easier to hide, humility when they are tempted to pride, and a steady concern for people who will never see their names on a ballot or a headline.

I pray for the people who live here, especially those who feel forgotten: the family skipping meals this month, the veteran sleeping in a shelter, the immigrant afraid to open the door, the young person who cannot see a future. Meet them where they are. Protect the vulnerable from those who would exploit them. Heal the wounds between neighbors who disagree, and help us listen to one another before we speak. Keep our churches faithful, our courts fair, and our hearts open to the truth.

Father, I ask that you would bring peace where there is anger, justice where there is fear, and mercy where there is hardness of heart. Let this nation be a place where truth is spoken in love and where the weak are not trampled. Above all, turn our hearts back to you, because a nation is only as strong as the people who trust in you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you are sovereign over this land. I lift up our leaders, our neighbors, and those who are struggling right now. Grant wisdom to those in authority, protect the vulnerable, and bring unity where there is division. Let justice and mercy meet in our communities, and let your peace settle over this nation. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks that prayers be offered for kings and all who are in high positions. When you pray this for your country, you are following that instruction, asking God to grant leaders a quiet and peaceable life so that the whole community can live in godliness.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

Written to exiles in a foreign land, this verse tells them to seek the welfare of their city and pray for it. Let it shape your prayer by turning your attention outward, asking God to bless the place you live and the people around you.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This psalm declares that a nation whose God is the Lord is blessed. Pray this verse by asking God to draw your country back to a place of trust in him, not in its own strength or wealth.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

Proverbs teaches that righteousness raises a nation, while sin is a disgrace to any people. As you pray, ask God to form a people who pursue what is right, and to lift up the shame of injustice wherever it hides.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord requires: justice, kindness, and humble walking with God. Use this verse to pray for the country’s leaders and citizens alike, that they would act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their country in the early morning, before the news and the noise of the day begin. Sit at a kitchen table or in a quiet chair with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands. Hold the prayer in your mind as you speak it, and let your eyes rest on a window or a map of the country if that helps you picture the places you are naming.

You do not have to pray this alone. Share it with your household, a small group, or your church, and invite others to add their own petitions. If you are in a season of grief or anger over national events, pray it slowly and repeat any line that stirs your heart. Let the words be a place to bring your honest feelings to God rather than a performance of calm.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps this nation keep you in his peace. May he give you courage to love your neighbors well, patience with those who see things differently, and hope that does not depend on the headlines. May he shine his face upon the land and upon the people who call it home.
