This short prayer for protection is for the moments when fear, danger, or uncertainty feels close, whether you are facing a hard drive home, a medical appointment, a difficult season at work, or a night when you simply cannot sleep. You can pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the car before you step out, or in the dark when worry is loudest. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and fears into the spaces it leaves open.

Short Prayer for Protection

Lord, I come to you because I need you to keep me safe. I do not always see what is ahead, and some days the things I cannot control press on my chest until it is hard to breathe. Be my shelter. Stand between me and harm, whether it comes from an accident on the road, a careless word, a sickness I have not yet noticed, or a person who means me no good. Guard my going out and my coming in, the people I love when they are away from me, and the children who depend on me to keep watch.

Where I am weak, be strong. Where I am tempted to panic, settle my heart with the knowledge that you are already present in every place I will go today. I give you the things I am most afraid of, one by one, and I ask you to hold them. Keep my mind clear enough to make wise choices, and keep my body steady enough to do what I need to do. If I cannot sleep tonight, let me rest in your presence even while I am awake. Thank you that I am not alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, keep me safe right now. Stand between me and whatever I fear, and guard the people I love while I am not with them. Steady my heart and clear my mind for the next hour. I trust that you are with me in this place, and I give you what I cannot carry. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Begin here if you need to remember where your safety comes from. Read these lines slowly, then turn them into your own words: “God, you are my shelter, and I will rest in you today.” Let the image of a hiding place sink in before you move on.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This passage speaks directly to the ordinary movements of life, going out and coming in. Pray it over your commute, your errands, or your children’s school day, asking the Lord to watch over each departure and each return.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

When you feel small and threatened, pray this verse as a declaration of trust. Name the specific fear that is pressing on you, then ask God to be the light and stronghold that makes that fear smaller than him.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This is a word God speaks to his people in fear. Pray it slowly, noticing the repeated promise of his presence, and ask him to help you believe that he is with you in the exact place where you are anxious right now.

John 17:15

I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.

(WEB)

Jesus prayed this for his followers before he left them. Pray it for yourself and for those who are in harm’s way, asking the Lord to guard them from the evil one and to keep them faithful in the middle of danger.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment to pray this prayer, such as when you first wake, before you pull out of the driveway, or before you climb into bed at night. Keeping a set time helps it become a habit you can return to when fear suddenly rises. If you are at home, you might pray it while standing at the front door, or while holding a child’s hand as you walk into school. Your hands can help too: open them as you say the words, releasing what you are holding, and close them again only when you are ready to carry the day.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. Ask a friend, a spouse, or a small group to pray it with you, or to pray it for a person you are worried about. Read the prayer aloud together, pausing after each paragraph so others can add their own names and concerns. Praying for protection alongside other believers reminds you that you are not carrying the weight alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be your shelter and your shield in every place you go this day. May he guard your going out and your coming in, and may his peace settle over you like a covering that cannot be pierced. Rest in his keeping, and walk forward unafraid.
