This short prayer for caregivers is written for people who give daily care to a parent, spouse, child, or friend who cannot fully care for themselves. Pray it at the start of a shift, in the car before going into the house, or late at night when the day’s tasks are finally done. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Caregivers

Lord, you see the person I care for and you see me. You know the medications I have counted out, the appointments I have rescheduled, and the nights I have lain awake listening for a cough or a call. Thank you that I am not doing this in a place you cannot reach. Give me strength for the tasks I face today, and help me take them one at a time instead of carrying the whole season at once.

When I am tired and short-tempered, forgive me, and meet me in that place with patience I cannot produce on my own. When I feel guilty for wishing for a break, remind me that rest is not a failure of love. Provide the help I need, whether through a friend who brings a meal, a nurse who answers the phone, or a moment of quiet I did not expect. Let me see small mercies in the middle of hard work. Be near the one I care for, and give them comfort and dignity in their body and their spirit. Hold us both. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and I do not have much left to give right now. Give me enough strength for the next task, and enough patience for the next question. Steady my hands and quiet my heart. Watch over the person I care for, and remind me that I am not carrying this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your energy is gone. Ask God to give you strength where you have none, and let the promise remind you that weariness is not the end of your story.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus honestly. Name the specific loads you carry, from the lifting and the paperwork to the grief, and receive his invitation to rest.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Use this verse when the work feels unseen or unrewarded. Ask God to keep your heart from growing weary in doing good, and to bring a harvest in his time.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you have failed or fallen short. Thank God that his grace is enough for your limits, and ask him to show his strength through your weakness.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Lift your eyes while you pray these words, especially in the middle of a long night. Ask the Lord who made heaven and earth to be your help as you keep watch over someone you love.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that already exists in your routine, such as while the coffee brews, during the drive to a medical appointment, or as you fold laundry. Keep a copy of the prayer on your phone or on a card in your pocket so you do not have to remember it. If your hands are busy with a task, speak the words softly as you work, letting the rhythm of the task become part of your prayer.

Consider asking a friend, pastor, or family member to pray this prayer with you or for you. Some caregivers find it helpful to pray it together on the phone once a week, which gives you someone who knows the situation and can carry it with you. Let them pray the shorter version over you when you have no words left.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over every life go with the one who keeps watch over another. May he renew your strength when you are spent, steady your steps when the way is hard, and give you rest that reaches the deepest part of you. May you know that you are seen, valued, and held.
