This short prayer for peace is for the moments when worry crowds in faster than you can name it, whether that is late at night, in the middle of a stressful workday, or while sitting in a waiting room. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into your own words.

Short Prayer for Peace

Lord, I come to you because my thoughts are running ahead of me. I keep rehearsing what might go wrong, and my shoulders are tight and my breathing is shallow. You know the specific things on my heart right now: the money that feels stretched, the conversation I am dreading, the health news I am still waiting to hear about, and the people I love who are carrying their own burdens. I cannot fix all of it tonight, and I am tired of trying to hold it together by myself.

So I give it to you, one thing at a time. Quiet the noise in my mind and steady the racing of my heart. Remind me that you are already present in every situation I am afraid of, and that nothing reaches you by surprise. Help me to rest in your character, to trust your timing, and to take the next faithful step rather than the hundred steps I imagine. Let your peace guard my heart and my thoughts, even while the circumstances remain unsettled. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious right now, and I do not have much to say. You already know what is weighing on me. Calm my mind and slow my breathing. Put your peace where my fear is, and remind me that you are near and in control. Help me take the next small step in front of me and trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

Jesus speaks of a peace that is not the same as what the world offers. When you pray this verse, ask him to give you his kind of peace, one that does not depend on your circumstances changing first.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving. Use this passage to bring each worry to God by name, and then pause to receive the peace he promises in return.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with a mind that stays fixed on God. Pray it when your thoughts keep drifting to what might go wrong, asking God to bring your attention back to his faithfulness.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

In the middle of a noisy, uncertain world, God invites you to be still and know that he is God. Pray this slowly, letting each word settle before moving to the next.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Paul asks that the peace of Christ rule in your heart. Pray this verse when you are weighing a decision, asking God to let his peace guide your choices and settle your conscience.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer at the start or end of the day, sitting somewhere quiet where they will not be interrupted. You might keep one hand open on your lap as a physical reminder to release what you are holding. Taking a slow breath between sentences can also give your body time to catch up with what you are saying.

If you are praying with someone else, such as a spouse, a friend, or a child who is struggling to sleep, you can read the prayer together, taking turns with the lines. Ask them afterward which worry is weighing on them most, and pray a sentence or two specifically for that concern.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who calms the wind and the waves fill your heart with a peace that guards your thoughts and steadies your steps. Whatever you carry today, may you rest knowing you are held by a God who is faithful, near, and unhurried.
