This short prayer is for those going through hard times, whether the hardship is a diagnosis, a broken relationship, a job loss, grief, or the slow weight of a season that will not lift. It is written to be prayed when you do not have the energy to find your own words. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and details only you know.

Short Prayer for Those Going Through Hard Times

Lord, you see me in this. You know the hour I cannot sleep, the phone call I am dreading, the bills on the kitchen table, and the quiet fear I have not told anyone about. Nothing in my situation is hidden from you, and that is a comfort I need today. Be near to me the way you promised to be near to those whose hearts are broken. Steady my breathing and give me enough strength for the next hour, not the whole season.

Father, I confess that I am tired, and some days I feel ashamed of being this tired. Forgive the bitterness that creeps in when I compare my struggle to other people’s lives. Replace my panic with a patient trust that you are working even when I cannot see it. Give wisdom to the decisions in front of me, and bring to mind the people you have placed around me who can carry some of this with me. Let me rest in your faithfulness, even if the answers are slow in coming.

Hold the people I love who are suffering alongside me. Comfort them where I cannot reach, and let my own weakness make room for your strength to show. Remind me that I am not forgotten, not abandoned, and not beyond your reach. I place this hard time in your hands, trusting that you can bring something good out of it, though I may not understand how until much later. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am struggling right now and I need you. Be near me in this moment and give me the next breath, the next step, and the next word I need. Calm what is racing inside me, and remind me that you are holding me up even when I feel like I am falling. Help me trust you with what I cannot control today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific ways your heart feels broken right now. Ask God to draw near to exactly those places, trusting that his closeness is not dependent on your feeling worthy of it.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each phrase settle. Ask God to become your refuge in the particular storm you are facing, and thank him for being steady when your circumstances are not.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse to speak directly to your fear. Pray the promise back to God, asking him to strengthen you, help you, and hold you in the moments you feel most alone.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus in prayer, naming the burdens you carry. Ask him to show you what it looks like to rest in him today, even if your problems remain.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

When you cannot see any good in your situation, pray this verse as an act of trust. Ask God to work through this hardship in ways you may not understand for a long time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place where you will not be interrupted, even if it is the car, the bathroom, or the edge of your bed before the house wakes. Many people find it helpful to pray this in the early morning or late at night, when the weight feels heaviest. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down any names or worries that surface as you pray, and return to that list each day.

If your hands feel restless, hold something steady while you speak, such as a cup of tea, a smooth stone, or your own clasped fingers. Consider asking a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray this prayer with you, or to pray it on the days you cannot find the words yourself. Praying together reminds you that you are part of a larger body that carries burdens with you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees you in this hard season give you peace that makes no sense to the anxious mind. May he strengthen your heart for each hour, and surround you with people who remind you that you are loved. May you feel his nearness today, and may you rest in the knowledge that this season will not be your final story.
